About The Company
Leawood, Kansas, a suburban community in the Kansas City Metropolitan area, is located in Johnson County, approximately 10 miles southwest of downtown Kansas City, MO. It covers 14.7 square miles and resembles an elongated rectangle running north/south. Interstate-435 crosses through the City and is just north of the center of the community. The City is bordered on three sides by the cities of Overland Park and Prairie Village, Kansas and on the fourth by Kansas City, Missouri. THE CITY OF LEAWOOD, KANSAS is looking for a
Recreation
Intern (Seasonal)

Summary/Objective

Under the supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, the Recreation Intern will support the Recreation Division by assisting with the planning, coordination, and execution of recreational programs, leagues, special events, and daily operations of facilities. This internship provides hands-on experience in municipal recreation, customer service, and community engagement while developing professional skills in program administration and event management.

  • Work with the Recreation team in planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating recreational-related programs, classes, aquatics, sport leagues, camps, and special events. Duties may include program registration, roster management, equipment inventory, scheduling and leading activities. 
  • Assist in analyzing recreational-related programming activities for attendance rates, facility trends, and participant surveys. 
  • Work with the Recreation team in learning the day-to-day operations of running a recreational facility.  Facilities may include a community room, aquatic center, nature center, and challenge course.
  • Assist patrons with inquiries regarding recreation classes, leagues, and programs. Responsibilities may include registering for a class or program, checking in for a program or class, answering phone calls and assisting with shelter rentals and pool passes.
  • Assist with the execution of department-wide events, which may include event setup and breakdown.

Education, Training, and Certification Requirements

  • Must have a minimum of two (2) years in an undergraduate degree or graduate level Recreation Administration, Leisure Management, or related degree program. 
  • Must have or be able to obtain First Aid and CPR Certifications.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record per the City’s drivers Use of Vehicles for City Business policy throughout employment with the City.
