Sol Systems is seeking a Solar Performance Engineering Intern to support the Asset Management Team. The intern will supervise and provide engineering support for an operational distributed generation and utility scale portfolio, with a focus on using data to drive technical performance. Through this position, the intern can expect to gain a thorough understanding of the technical and commercial operations of utility and commercial solar assets. Additionally, the intern will learn how to accurately quantify performance and develop reports to share with investors and shareholders.
The Asset Management Team helps Sol Systems and its clients manage their solar investments. The team monitors the company’s direct investments, manages its financial exposure from existing contracts, and provides feedback to internal and external stakeholders based on technical analysis of the operating portfolio.
Key responsibilities:
- Daily coordination with Operations and Maintenance (O&M) service providers, equipment manufacturers, software providers, and asset managers to resolve issues and ensure optimal PV project performance
- Monitor site performance using in-house and third-party platforms
- Proactively identify, address, and resolve concerns, risks, and questions about system performance
- Maintain a database of existing solar assets by entering maintenance events and performance data, and validate record integrity by cross-referencing with source data
- Administer warranty/performance guarantees by ensuring minimum production guarantees are met with regard to the O&M contracts
- Prepare technical performance reports for internal and external stakeholders
- Maintain inventory of key project attributes including installed equipment, spare parts, and warranty periods
- Update internal data engineering tools to achieve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability, especially for large-scale performance data and analytics
- Support technical review of Commissioning tests for developing utility-scale assets
A successful candidate will possess the following skills and attributes:
- Interest in renewable energy
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to succinctly summarize complex technical issues, both in writing and verbally
- Pursuing a degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field
- Proficiency with data science and data visualization tools such as Python, SQL, Snowflake, and Power BI is a plus
- A current rising undergraduate senior or graduate student
Location & Hours: This is a full-time summer internship (30–40 hours per week) based in Washington, D.C. The internship will last approximately 8–10 weeks. Interns will be expected to work in the office three days per week.
Compensation: This is a paid internship, with an hourly rate of $20–$25, commensurate with experience.
