About The Company
The Connecticut Institute for Refugees and Immigrants (CIRI), formerly the International Institute of Connecticut (IICONN), was founded in 1918 and is a statewide nonprofit agency that provides legal and social services to immigrants and refugees in Connecticut to help them become self-sufficient, integrated and contributing members of the community. CIRI offers legal, social, linguistic and educational programs to help refugees, asylees and immigrants overcome the many barriers they face in adjusting to their new environments. In addition, CIRI provides special services to victims of serious crimes such as human trafficking, torture and domestic violence. Each year, CIRI assists close to 5,000 individuals from its offices in Bridgeport, Stamford and Hartford.
About the Role

The Connecticut Institute for Refugees and Immigrants (CIRI) is seeking a dedicated intern fluent in Spanish to support our immigration legal team. This is an excellent opportunity for students or recent graduates interested in immigration law, human rights, and social justice. Interns will gain hands-on experience working with attorneys and legal staff, assisting clients navigating the U.S. immigration system.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist attorneys and legal staff with case preparation, research, and document drafting.
  • Conduct intake interviews with clients and assist in gathering necessary documentation.
  • Support clients in completing immigration applications and forms.
  • Maintain accurate client records and case files.
  • Observe legal consultations and attend relevant hearings or community outreach events.
  • Assist with translation and interpretation 
  • Perform administrative tasks as needed to support legal team operations.

Qualifications:

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student, or recent graduate, with an interest in immigration law, social justice, or related fields.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Attention to detail and ability to handle confidential information.
  • Spanish fluency is required.
  • Commitment to CIRI's mission and values.

Duration and Schedule: 

This is an unpaid internship position requiring a commitment of 8-15 hours per week for a summer session between May and August. The schedule is flexible and can be tailored to accommodate the intern’s academic requirements.
