About The Company
The Connecticut Institute for Refugees and Immigrants (CIRI), formerly the International Institute of Connecticut (IICONN), was founded in 1918 and is a statewide nonprofit agency that provides legal and social services to immigrants and refugees in Connecticut to help them become self-sufficient, integrated and contributing members of the community. CIRI offers legal, social, linguistic and educational programs to help refugees, asylees and immigrants overcome the many barriers they face in adjusting to their new environments. In addition, CIRI provides special services to victims of serious crimes such as human trafficking, torture and domestic violence. Each year, CIRI assists close to 5,000 individuals from its offices in Bridgeport, Stamford and Hartford.

Description:

The Connecticut Institute for Refugees and Immigrants (CIRI) is seeking a dedicated and motivated intern to support our refugee youth team. The youth services intern works with the youth services coordinator and the refugee services staff to implement

programming and support for school-aged children. The intern will work with the team to prepare for and run the youth Summer English Academy program. This summer camp program for refugee youth will operate on weekdays from June 29 through July 24 in Bridgeport. 


Key Responsibilities:

  • Support daily summer school operations and assist CIRI staff as needed 
  • Provide administrative support, including:
    • Completing TAFs and managing receipts
    • Case noting and documentation
  • Coordinate with volunteers and assist with scheduling and communication
  • Help teachers during instructional time when support is needed
  • Communicate and coordinate with external contacts throughout the program
  • Assist with general organization and problem-solving during summer school activities
  • After Summer Academy, interns may assist students and staff to prepare for the 2026-27 school year 

Location: Bridgeport (CIRI’s office at 410 Colorado Avenue and offsite Summer Academy campus at Great Oaks Charter School, 375 Howard Ave, Bridgeport) 


Duration and Schedule:


This is an unpaid internship position beginning in late May/early June through August. The intern would commit to 1-2 days a week for approximately the first month of the internship. During Summer Academy (June 29-July 24), the intern must commit to five days a week, Monday through Friday, 8 am to 2:30 pm. After Summer Academy, the intern would commit to 1-2 days a week for the duration of the internship period. The schedule is flexible and can be tailored to accommodate the intern’s academic requirements.

 

Qualifications

Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Education, Social Work, International Relations, Human Services, or a related field.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work with diverse populations in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Detail-oriented with good organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) preferred.
  • Fluency in a second language (e.g., Spanish, Arabic, Dari, Pashto) is a plus.
