Internship Title: Outreach Intern
Location: Whatcom County
Reports to: Outreach Coordinators
Hours: flexible; approximately 15-18 hours per week
Duration of Internship: TBD; paid position(s) are not guaranteed at the completion of internship
Starting Wage Range: unpaid, service-learning internship

At Northwest Youth Services, we affirm youth experience and autonomy as we work together to foster collective healing and justice, in order to dismantle the systems of oppression that perpetuate youth homelessness.
Internship Description
This position contributes to NWYS’s success by supporting NWYS outreach efforts in Whatcom County. Duties may include foot routes, supply distribution, tabling at local schools and events, encampment outreach, support with food rescue pick-up, cooking, and meal distribution, and outreach to community members and local businesses. NWYS Whatcom Outreach utilizes a relationship-based approach to support youth and young adults experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity. Outreach provides survival supplies, resource navigation, referrals to treatment and housing services, light touch case management and care coordination, transportation when appropriate, programming in more rural parts of the county, and supports clients who are currently incarcerated in juvenile detention, Whatcom County Jail, and WA state prisons.

Minimum Qualifications
- Enrollment in Human Services, Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, or similar educational program
- Knowledge and understanding of the concepts of institutional and structural racism and bias and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to prioritize multiple and varied tasks
- Background check clearance
Required within the first 30 days of term (provided by NWYS):
- CPR/First Aid/Bloodborne Pathogens certifications required
- Food Handler’s Certificate (positions handling food)
- Must have negative TB test
- Full understanding of the CPS mandatory reporting requirements
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of issues faced by young people at-risk of/experiencing homelessness
