For more than four decades, Children's Museum Houston has supported student achievement, empowered parents, and ignited a lifelong love of learning. We are consistently rated as one of the top children's museums in the nation. Our programming serves more than 900,000 participants annually at the Museum, at the Fort Bend Children's Discovery Center, and at the 270+ outreach locations across Greater Houston. We welcome families with offerings that include 13 exhibits, a performing arts series, a full slate of cultural programming, science activities led by degreed educators, and weekly Free Family Nights. 


Job Summary

Children’s Museum Houston is seeking a current college student who is interested in joining the Museum’s education team as a paid summer intern for the Randy Allen Education Internship, an annual program created in honor and in memory of past Museum board president, Randy Allen. Through an 8-week paid internship, young adults pursuing associate’s or bachelor’s degrees in fields related to the Museum’s mission of transforming communities through innovative child-centered learning will work within the Education Department to gain valuable experience related to their planned degree and future career goals. Goals will be set at the beginning of each summer that will clarify the student’s goals related to their planned degree work and the Museum’s goals for the scope of work to help in advancing the Mission. A multimedia report generated by the intern will be required at the end of the summer to showcase collective accomplishments and their related learning.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Onsite Visitor Experience

  • Work closely with the Director of Visitor Experience in daily and special programming and provide visitor support in galleries.
  • Assist with educational activities/programming.
  • Assist the Manager of Curriculum and Evaluation in administering surveys to visitors and input survey response.
  • Assist with BASF Kids Labs, classes of STEM experiments, as needed

Outreach Programs

  • Assist with the development and prototyping of family activity kits. These hands-on kits will provide low-cost materials for activities, books, and tips that support parents in nurturing and encouraging early brain development for children birth through 8 yrs.
  • Work closely with Educators to provide support for Camp Adventure sessions.

Working Conditions

  • Intern will work as scheduled across departments. Intern must be comfortable working in an environment that is at times noisy and crowded. 

Physical Requirements

  • Interns are often required to be on their feet. Additionally, interns may occasionally be asked to lift or move objects of moderate weight. 

Education: 

        Applicants must be an enrollee in good standing and have completed one full academic year of study at an accredited, two or four-year college or university. This internship is only for associate’s or bachelor’s degree candidates; no graduate degrees.

Experience

Applicants must have a declared major or minor in a field related to the Museum’s mission and demonstrate a desire to either pursue a career in an education-related profession or contribute back their professional knowledge through post-baccalaureate volunteerism.

Weekend and some Thursday nights work may be required
