About The Company
MassDEP serves the Commonwealth by protecting natural resource areas that involve water, land and air. MassDEP is responsible for ensuring clean air and water, safe management and recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources. MassDEP enforces environmental laws, provides technical assistance to cities and towns, issues permits and licenses for activities near sensitive resources, inspects contaminated site cleanups, and partners with other federal and state agencies, municipal officials and environmental stakeholders.
About the Role

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated AI Engineering Intern with a passion for artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and data-driven development. You will work alongside our MassDOT Technology division’s AI Engineering team to design, build, and deploy AI/ML applications and data pipelines using AWS services.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain real-world experience applying machine learning and AI techniques in a cloud-native environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

AI & Machine Learning Responsibilities

  • Develop and fine-tune large language models (LLMs) and other machine learning models using AWS tools such as Bedrock, SageMaker, Kendra, Lambda, and Deep Learning AMIs.
  • Assist in the design and deployment of AI/ML-powered applications and intelligent automation workflows.
  • Participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and daily stand-up meetings with cross-functional teams.
  • Research emerging AI/ML techniques and support experimentation and documentation of findings

 

Cross-Functional & Application Support Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with stakeholders and application owners to gather and define business and technical requirements.
  • Analyze existing workflows, identify opportunities for automation or improvement, and contribute to gap analyses.
  • Assist with the development of project work plans, estimates, deliverables, and documentation.
  • Create case scenarios and participate in the user acceptance testing (UAT) process.
  • Document support tickets and ensure timely communication with business and IT stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with vendors, internal teams, and leadership to manage system enhancements and troubleshoot issues.
  • Maintain clear documentation of current and future state system processes.

  • Ability to effectively communicate and build consensus across various project stakeholders including, IT management, business customers and other IT colleagues and team members.
