Job Summary

Key Deliverables and Responsibilities

Cambridge has recruited talented interns from across the country to join us during the summer for a 11 week paid internship. We'll have over 25 interns join us at our home offices in Fairfield, Iowa and Phoenix, Arizona. The Next Step internship program gives students practical insight into the financial services industry and allows students to gain practical knowledge in their field. Students are partnered with a professional mentor, supervisor, and executive leader to gain networking opportunities and learn from industry professionals. At the conclusion of the internship, each intern will have the opportunity to present their experience and a specific project of their choice.

UI Design Internship — Enterprise Design System Focus

About the Role

We’re looking for a UI Design Intern who is excited to learn and contribute to an enterprise design system used across multiple digital products. This internship is ideal for students who enjoy working in Figma, thinking in systems, and designing components that scale.

As a UI Design Intern, you’ll work closely with designers and engineers to help evolve our design system by creating, refining, and theming UI components, organizing variables, and ensuring consistency across experiences. This role is heavily UI- and system-focused, with opportunities to collaborate cross-functionally and gain hands-on experience working on real production design systems.

Expert-level skills are not required—but you should already have a solid foundation in Figma and design system concepts and be eager to grow those skills in a real-world environment.

As a UI Design Intern, you will:

  • Assist in building and maintaining an enterprise design system in Figma

  • Create and update UI components using best practices (variants, properties, and states)

  • Apply and manage design tokens, variables, and theming (color, typography, spacing, etc.)

  • Help ensure visual consistency and scalability across products using the design system

  • Collaborate with designers and engineers to align design components with development needs

  • Review and refine components with accessibility and usability in mind

  • Contribute to design system documentation and usage guidelines

  • Participate in critiques, design reviews, and team collaboration sessions

What We Are Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in (or recently graduated from) a degree program in:

    • UX/UI Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, or a related field

  • Strong working knowledge of Figma, including:

    • Components and variants

    • Auto layout

    • Styles and variables

  • A solid understanding of design systems and why they matter

  • Ability to think systematically about UI (consistency, reuse, scalability)

  • A portfolio that shows UI design work, components, or system-based thinking (applications without a portfolio will not be considered)

  • Familiarity with accessibility principles (WCAG, inclusive design)

  • Curiosity, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn

Nice to Have

  • Experience working with or studying design tokens or theming

  • Exposure to developer handoff or collaboration with engineers

  • Basic understanding of front-end concepts (HTML/CSS/React)

Compensation: $22-26 per hour. This range is a good faith estimate of the compensation to be offered for this position based on the ideal candidate’s qualifications, the Company’s operational needs, and other considerations permitted by law. The actual pay offered to a specific candidate may vary above or below the stated range.

Benefits:

  • Paid time off: Interns receive 16 hours of paid time off to use throughout the summer

  • Volunteer time: Interns receive eight hours of paid time off to volunteer throughout the summer

  • Holiday pay: Memorial Day and Independence Day

  • Educational courses: Interns participate in educational training hosted by our Associate Training and Development team. Courses consist of career workshops, problem solving, professional development and financial services industry basics.

  • Networking events: Interns have the opportunity to network with our company executives during the Welcome and End of Summer Banquets. Interns will participate in leadership panels to hear from company leaders, ask questions and gain valuable insight as well as have the chance to job shadow in other teams at Cambridge. Following the summer internship, interns have access to the Next Step Intern Alumni LinkedIn group to stay in touch with Cambridge and other past interns.

  • Opportunity to discuss continued employment with Cambridge on a part-time or full-time basis following the internship.
