Redwood is localizing a global battery supply chain that seamlessly integrates recovery, reuse, and recycling — keeping critical minerals in circulation and driving the energy transition. Founded in 2017, we’re delivering low-cost and large-scale energy storage and producing battery materials in the U.S. for the first time, all from batteries we already have.

Mechanical Engineering Intern/Co-op 

Redwood Materials is seeking an entrepreneurial Mechanical Engineering intern or co-op to support our pilot and commercial scale production operations during the Summer 2026 timeline.

Responsibilities Will Include:  

  • Leading and supporting technical design and specification of new mechanical processing equipment and manufacturing facilities.
  • Conducting high-level technical troubleshooting of equipment and electromechanical systems.
  • Developing prototypes, research projects, and experiments for new processes. 

Desired Qualifications  

  • Pursuing a B.S. or advanced degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • Prior engineering internship experience with a leading technology or manufacturing company.
  • Hands-on experience building products or projects in the workshop or lab and living with your own designs in a functional environment.
  • Coursework and/or experience with thermodynamics, gas combustion and chemical processes preferred.
  • Working knowledge of major mechanical design software packages.
  • Coursework and/or experience with automation and programmable control systems.
  • Highly self-motivated, entrepreneurial mindset. 

Physical Requirements 

  • Ability to safely perform job duties in both office and production environments. 
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. as needed.  
  • Must maintain regular and punctual attendance in alignment with company and regulatory standards. 
  • Wear proper PPE when necessary.  

Working Conditions:  

  • Split work environment between office and the production facility. 
  • Work may involve extended periods of working in the production facility.  
  • Ability to work in challenging working conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while protected by PPE, for extended periods of time.   
  • Willingness to contribute at all levels of the organization. 

The position is full-time. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
