Working as a part of a team, the Project Assistant will provide overall support for projects and is accountable for managing all aspects of construction projects, including supervision, scheduling, procurement, safety oversight, subcontractor coordination and cost control. This role will also be accountable for completing quantity take-offs, preparing cost estimates, communicating with crews and sub-trades to determine best work practices. This role plays a critical part in ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest standards, while cultivating strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, and field teams.

This is a summer student position with a term from May – August 2026

Location: VS Construction - Grande Prairie


How You’ll Add Value

  • Actively contribute to Volker Stevin Contracting safety culture, promoting a safe and productive work environment 
  • Lead project teams with clear communication, coordination, and follow-ups to achieve goals
  • Establish project procedures aligned with contracts and the HSE Manual
  • Ensure work meets industry standards, codes, and specifications
  • Define and communicate project scope, schedule, and budget to stakeholders
  • Oversee project schedules and budgets, ensuring alignment with goals
  • Track progress, address deviations, and meet milestones
  • Secure approvals for scope, budget, or schedule changes
  • Conduct onsite inspections to assess conditions and risks
  • Participate in onsite meetings with clients, stakeholders, and teams
  • Organize bid files with supporting estimate information
  • Maintainaccuratesupplier, subcontractor, and client contacts
  • Foster constructive, solution-oriented client interactions
  • Supervise construction to uphold service standards and manage changes
  • Support field teams for safe, steady project progression
  • Engage in safety culture through training, meetings, and inspections
  • Assist Site Foremen and Superintendents in safety meetings and resolutions

 

What You Bring

  • Pursuing a civil engineering degree or diploma and returning to school in September 2026
  • Experience with construction crews and heavy civil construction is an asset
  • Professional demeanor with a positive image in public, team, and client interactions
  • Valid Class 5Driver’s License with a clean driver’s abstract
  • Willingness to work extended hours, overtime, and travel to remote areas as needed

Criteria for position

To be considered, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution (college, university, or technical program)
  • Returning to post-secondary studies after completing the work term
