About the Role

If so, UPMC Twin Lakes' Student Behavioral Intern (SBI) program could be the perfect way to spend your summer!

As an SBI, under Clinical Supervision, you will receive training and development opportunities that will help you build a solid foundation as a future mental health professional at a renowned organization in Mental Health Clinical Care, Research and Education. Just a few opportunities in this program include:

  • Provide direct patient care with one-on-one guidance from a trained preceptor, allowing you the invaluable opportunity to apply your skills in a real-world setting, build confidence in your abilities & gain valuable experience as a future mental health professional.
  • Participate in shadowing & immersion experiences that allow you to explore different areas of mental health care to discover what you enjoy most!
  • Develop essential skills by attending various specialized trainings and educational workshops such as Comprehensive Crisis Management, Trauma Informed Care, Suicide Risk Screening & Assessment, CALM training and more!
  • Establish relationships with behavioral health leaders and UPMC recruiters, expanding your professional network and future career opportunities.

Program Details:  

  • Eligibility: Must have completed sophomore year of an undergraduate degree in an area of social sciences or behavioral health, with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Paid Internship: A 10-week paid opportunity at the set rate of $18.19. This program does not offer college credits.
  • Schedule: Program begins May 18, 2026, and will end on August 7, 2026. Working shifts will alternate between daylight, evening, or nighttime hours. Majority of trainings are scheduled during daylight hours.

Responsibilities:

  • Performing daily patient care and coordination tasks under preceptor supervision. 
  • Documenting & reporting patient conditions to healthcare team. 
  • Participate in team activities, trainings & meetings. 
  • Adhering to safety policies.
  • Maintaining a safe & clean environment. 


  • High School Diploma Required.
  • Completion of sophomore Year or equivalent of bachelor's program in an area of social services or behavioral health
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 with an expected graduation within two years.
  • Cares for patients under the direction of a preceptor that is currently employed in the position that they would be eligible for upon graduation. 
  • Preference given to students who are interested in pursuing a UPMC career upon graduation.

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) - required within 30 days of hire
