Position Summary:

Work Model: 

Core Lab & Ops: This role typically requires that the majority of the work be conducted on-site and thus will be subject to certain on-site safety protocols during the pandemic.

Responsibilities:

Ultragenyx has multiple Gene Therapy programs in development in the rare and ultrarare disease space, and a robust pipeline. Reporting to the Associate Director, Upstream Process Development, the Co-op/Intern will support the research and development of advanced cell culture processes and programs in late-stage development for AAV vectors.

  • Actively contributes to programs in late-stage development to enhance AAV manufacturing technologies/capabilities and work-processes.
  • Work directly with supervision to design and execute experiments to support material generation, process characterization, and scale-up of cell culture processes for AAV production.
  • Demonstrate the ability to quickly learn and independently perform routine cell culture activities: proper aseptic technique, operation of lab scale equipment including metabolite and cell analyzers, and small-scale to pilot-scale cell culture bioreactors.
  • Collect controlled experimental data and maintain accurate daily logs of experiments including methods, results, and conclusions.
  • Organize and plot experimental data and work with supervision to draw conclusions and insights for the upstream process.
  • Ensure high-quality, timely documentation in electronic laboratory notebooks and technical reports.
  • Present scientific findings to the upstream development group or broader internal audience.
  • Support the compilation, tracking, and trending of manufacturing data for commercial process monitoring.
  • Assist in general laboratory maintenance duties, including inventory of consumables and raw materials, media and buffer preparation, and routine lab maintenance/cleaning tasks.

Requirements:

  • Graduate or Undergraduate student in Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry or a related discipline.
    • This is a 6 month co-op, starting July 6, 2026 working full-time (40 hours per week) until December 18, 2026
  • Experience working with controlled bioreactor systems is a plus.
  • Interest in learning and working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrates strong organizational and communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
  • Independently motivated and detail-oriented with good problem-solving ability.

 

U.S. Hourly Wage Range: 

  • $23.00-$30.00/hour. The estimated hourly range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual hourly wage offered will depend on the candidate’s school year/level.

The range may also be adjusted based on applicant's geographic location.


This position is eligible for annual bonus and equity incentives. Actual individual pay is determined by demonstrated experience and internal equity alignment.
