About The Company
Circular Action Alliance (CAA) is a U.S. Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO) dedicated to implementing effective Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws for paper and packaging. As a nonprofit, producer-led organization, CAA is committed to delivering harmonized, best-in-class compliance services to all producers to advance an efficient and effective circular economy. CAA was founded in 2022 by 20 producers representing the food, beverage, consumer goods, and retail industries. CAA is the only organization approved to implement U.S. EPR laws for paper and packaging, and is operating as the single PRO in California and Colorado. CAA has submitted an initial program plan to operate as the PRO in Oregon, and has also been selected to represent producer interests as the PRO on the State Producer Responsibility Advisory Council in Maryland.

Role Overview

We are seeking detail-oriented and proactive interns in several parts of our organization, including a Legal intern. Our interns will play a critical role in helping deliver projects and key business deliverables for CAA. These individuals will play a role advancing some of our work in producer registrations, legal research, setting up dashboards and other operational enhancements.

Representative Projects that You May Work On

Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) System Support

Review and assist with coding CAA’s legacy contracts uploaded into CAA’s new CLM system. Tag and structure key metadata (term, renewal, expiration, termination, notice periods) and identify affirmative obligations, renewal requirements, and payment structures. Help establish consistent tagging conventions to improve internal filtering and reporting.

Contract Templates

Inventory existing contract templates and form agreements. Create an index documenting use cases and common variations. Identify gaps or inconsistencies for further Legal review. Assist with developing internal reference materials (issue spotting checklists or process guides) to support Legal review.

Trademark Use and Fair Use Guide

Research and develop internal guidance on protecting CAA’s branding and handling third-party logo use. Work collaboratively with the Communications department on development of proposed clearance forms and tracking charts.

Building of AI-Assisted Legal Research Libraries

Help compile state-specific “libraries” of public resources (statutes, rules, filed program plans, public guidance documents, etc.) to support AI-assisted legal research and functionalities.

Targeted Legal Research & Special Projects

Discrete, well-defined legal research projects – including legal research and memo writing. 

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled as a 1st or 2nd year student pursuing a Juris Doctor at an accredited law school
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and written communication skills
  • Ability to conduct legal research and clearly synthesize statutes, regulations, and contracts
  • Ability tomaintainconfidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and work professionally across teams

Compensation & Other Information

  • Location:Fully remote
  • Pay Rate: $25.00 per hour. Since this is a temporary position, it is not eligible for benefits
  • Interns must have their own laptop and access to high-speed internet.
  • Reports To:General Counsel
