The Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s mission is to protect, manage, and advocate for the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.

 

Position Summary


The Social Media Intern will provide support to ATC’s Communications department in the creation, implementation, and measurement of social media strategies to effectively highlight the work of the Conservancy and engage and grow target audiences.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create social media content, including drafting copy and producing simple graphics and videos for use on ATC’s Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and TikTok.
  • Track metrics for social media campaigns.
  • Monitor responses and engage with followers as appropriate on each channel.
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions to share ideas, define strategy, and be instrumental in bringing them to life. 
  • Upload, tag, and organize photos in the ATC’s photo management database.
  • Share emerging social media practices and trends.
  • Occasionally create additional content for the ATC’s digital channels like websites, blog, etc.

Qualifications

  • Status as a student or recent graduate interested in environmental/nonprofit communications, marketing, or any other related field. 
  • Experience with simple graphic design using tools like Canva. 
  • Strong writing and communication skills. 
  • Strong familiarity with social media platform features and functionality.  
  • Prior experience with Hootsuite and Adobe Photoshop/Premiere a plus. 
  • Versatile and collaborative, able to work with a variety of team members. 
  • Commitment to detail and vigilance about deadlines. 
  • Ability to work independently on organizational projects. 
  • Located in an Appalachian Trail state or in proximity to the Trail is a plus.

 

Additional Details:

  • The Appalachian Trail Conservancy intends this internship for students enrolled in educational pursuits.
  • ATC anticipates students that bring knowledge and experience from their studies in the following program areas may provide particular benefit to the project.
  • Subject areas can include but are not limited to Public Relations, Art and Design, Marketing and Communications, English, Editing and Writing.
  • Position Duration: 2026 - 2027 academic year (August 2026 - May 2027)
  • Hourly Pay Rate: $18 - $20
  • 15 hours / week, majority of hours worked during business hours (9am - 5pm ET)
  • This position is a remote internship.
