Placement description

We are looking for a trainee in the Data Governance and Analytics Office.

Specific objectives and projects

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) plays a key role in ensuring the quality, safety and efficacy of medicines used across Europe. One of the systems under the EMA responsibility is the Clinical Trials Information System (CTIS), which supports the entire lifecycle of clinical trials in the EU/EEA. As the system continues to evolve, EMA is strengthening its analytical capabilities to better monitor trends, improve transparency, and support data-driven decision-making.

Business Intelligence (BI) is at the heart of this transformation. By turning complex data into clear insights and accessible dashboards, BI enables regulators, policymakers, and the public to better understand the clinical trial landscape.

As a trainee, you will join a dynamic team focused on enhancing how EMA creates, automates, and maintains dashboards and reports produced from the CTIS Business Intelligence environment. You will have a chance to contribute to a highly visible project with real impact on public health and regulatory decision-making.

Your main project will involve:

• Developing and improving interactive dashboards using Microsoft Power BI, helping transform CTIS data into meaningful visual insights.
• Supporting the design of automated reporting solutions, reducing manual work and increasing efficiency across the organisation.
• Creating clean, well-structured Markdown-based reports to support publication, documentation, and internal communications.
• Participating in data quality checks and data preparation workflows, ensuring accuracy and consistency in the dashboards.
• Collaborating with data analysts, business users, and IT teams to translate reporting needs into intuitive business intelligence solutions.
• Contributing to the evolution of BI standards and best practices within the team.

Learning outcomes

During this traineeship, the trainee will work within the environment of the Clinical Trials Information System (CTIS) and its Business Intelligence (BI) capabilities, used by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) to monitor and analyse clinical trial activity across the EU.

The trainee will be exposed to real regulatory data, modern BI tools (i.e. Microsoft Power BI), and automation technologies (i.e. Databricks and Python), gaining hands-on experience in a highly relevant public health and digital-innovation context.

The selected candidate will develop practical skills in Business Intelligence, including the creation of Power BI dashboards, automated reporting workflows using Microsoft Power Automate, and Markdown-based documentation. The trainee will gain an applied understanding of data quality, analysis and visualisation, as well as insight into how CTIS data supports EMA’s regulatory activities. In line with EMA’s traineeship competency framework, the trainee will strengthen their digital and analytical capabilities, improve their communication and teamwork skills, and enhance their ability to work proactively in a multicultural, multidisciplinary environment.
