Umialik Insurance Company, a member of the Western National Insurance Group, is seeking an energetic individual who will assist our Commercial Lines underwriting team in generating profitable premium growth. The Commercial Lines Intern will provide support to a variety of projects and initiatives, while playing a key role in our day-to-day operations.

Umialik Insurance Company Internship Program Summary: 

Umialik Insurance provides a robust internship program designed for individuals aiming to acquire valuable experience in the insurance industry. This program not only offers practical, hands-on opportunities and project work in partnership with our underwriting team; but interns will also have the opportunity to enhance their existing skill sets through a range of professional development activities, cultivate relationships with employees and fellow interns, and participate in impactful volunteer initiatives within the community. 


Position Summary: 

As our Commercial Lines Underwriting Intern, you will be a key contributor not only within Underwriting Department, but across the office including departments such as our Audit team, Loss Control, and Claims. In addition to supporting our various teams, you will:  

  • Assist with the growth of our Region by ensuring renewal policies are issued correctly and that agents/insureds are kept advised of any key changes and/or information 
  • Assist with ongoing projects that serve insureds and agents 
  • Perform general clerical tasks for the department 
  • Duties and activities covered by specific instructions, standard practices, and established procedures that generally require some interpretation  
  • Consistently act according to our customer experience standards, including responding quickly; maintaining a positive attitude; building rapport; demonstrating empathy; managing the customer’s expectations; using the proper communication channel for the situation; and taking ownership to ensure the customer’s issue is resolved
  • Other duties as assigned  

Requirements

 What You’ll Need to Succeed: 

  • Completed two years of college preferred 
  • Interest in the insurance industry  
  • Clear written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills  
  • Strong organization, time management and prioritization skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously  
  • Applies knowledge to help solve problems of relatively limited scope and complexity  
  • Ability to meet deadlines, work independently, and be an effective team member  
  • Demonstrated ability to be detail oriented and accurate  
  • Ability to use good judgment and to be flexible 
  • Proficient use of various core systems, office and computer equipment and software packages  

Compensation Overview: 

The base pay offered for this position will be $21.00/hour.
