About The Company
We are strengthening America’s capacity in nuclear energy, creating a new set of possibilities for our shared present and future, from generating clean energy at scale to forging energy security.
About the Role

About the Company

General Matter is reimagining how complex building systems are designed, coordinated, and delivered. We combine modern engineering workflows with digital modeling to help architects, builders, and operators create sustainable, high‑performance spaces. Our teams bring together multidisciplinary expertise to accelerate the future of how buildings are designed and operated.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Structural Engineering Intern with a strong interest in structural systems design for industrial and mission‑critical facilities to join our growing engineering team. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers and designers to support the development of structural solutions for buildings similar to data centers, manufacturing plants, and other large‑scale infrastructure. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated student to gain hands-on experience in heavy-industrial facility design and BIM workflows within the AEC industry.

What You’ll Do

  • Assist in the design and coordination of structural components in BIM for industrial facilities, including steel framing and concrete foundations.
  • Support senior engineers in performing basic structural calculations, member sizing, and gravity load take-offs.
  • Assist in the preparation of structural drawings, details, and calculation packages for high-reliability projects.
  • Learn to apply building codes (IBC, ASCE 7, 43) to real-world structural problems under professional mentorship.
  • Help develop and maintain BIM models using Revit and AutoCAD to ensure integration with mechanical and electrical disciplines.
  • Support the documentation of site visits, structural observations, and construction submittal reviews.
  • Explore workflow automation and computational design tasks using visual programming (Dynamo, Grasshopper) or coding (Python).
  • Collaborate and communicate technical progress within multidisciplinary project teams.

What You’ll Bring

  • Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in Civil or Structural Engineering (typically a Junior or Senior standing).
  • Foundational coursework in structural analysis, steel design, and reinforced concrete.
  • Basic familiarity with BIM modeling software, such as Revit and AutoCAD.
  • Exposure to structural analysis software (e.g., RISA-3D, SAP2000, or RAM Structural System) through academic or personal projects.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and a fundamental understanding of physics-based engineering principles.
  • Interest in AI tools for design, visual programming (Dynamo, Grasshopper), coding (Python, C#), and/or open‑source projects.
  • High attention to detail and a proactive approach to learning complex industrial design standards.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly and work collaboratively in a team environment.

Bonus Qualifications

  • Previous internship experience in the AEC industry or a related construction field.
  • Familiarity with industrial-specific structural requirements or high-seismic design concepts.
  • Experience with 3D modeling or rendering for technical presentations.
  • Participation in engineering societies or student design competitions (e.g., ASCE Steel Bridge).

If you’re excited to develop next‑generation industrial and mission‑critical infrastructure using cutting‑edge tools and multidisciplinary collaboration, we’d love to hear from you.
