About The Company
MassDEP serves the Commonwealth by protecting natural resource areas that involve water, land and air. MassDEP is responsible for ensuring clean air and water, safe management and recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources. MassDEP enforces environmental laws, provides technical assistance to cities and towns, issues permits and licenses for activities near sensitive resources, inspects contaminated site cleanups, and partners with other federal and state agencies, municipal officials and environmental stakeholders.

Bureau/Division Overview

The Division of Local Services (DLS) within the DOR is dedicated to promoting sound municipal finance management practices and supporting local officials by providing guidance, training, and oversight in various aspects of local governance, taxation, and financial management.  The Data Analytics and Resources Bureau (DARB) is responsible for collecting, managing and distributing data. DARB maintains the Division's website, provides user support and software development services for DLS Gateway, and provides training, support, and consulting services to local government in collaboration with the Division’s other bureaus. It develops and publishes Databank reports and visualizations based on financial, demographic and other data related to local government.

Position Summary

Join us as a Summer Data Analyst and embark on a dynamic journey within the Data Analytics and Resources Bureau (DARB). This role supports our team of report and visualization developers. It is an opportunity to be a key player in our effort to organize, document and present information. 

 Core Responsibilities:

  • Support development of reports, datasets, visualizations, and other data publications.
  • Support gathering requirements, preparing and verifying data, designing, developing, conducting QA, recognizing problems/risks, publishing, and maintaining them to meet stakeholder needs.
  • Support documentation of reports and visualizations according to bureau guidelines.
  • Collaborate closely with our seasoned team of report and visualization developers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Tableau, Power BI, Logi Analytics, or Google Looker.
  • Experience with JIRA and Confluence.
  • Knowledge of SQL for data querying and manipulation.
  • Strong organizational skills and a sharp eye for detail.
  • Effective written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to thrive in both collaborative team settings and independent work.
  • An open mindset and willingness to learn new tools and techniques.

 

An external candidate recommended for a position with the Department of Revenue will be subject to a background check that includes checks for: state and federal tax compliance; child support compliance; education verification; Massachusetts CORI checks; criminal background checks in state(s) of current and previous residence/employment; validation of eligibility to work in the United States; and national fingerprint-based criminal background checks.
