Position Summary:
We’re seeking a motivated engineering student to join our team this summer. This hands-on internship provides real-world experience in product design, testing, validation, and continuous improvement.
The intern will support technical documentation, product validation, data analysis, prototype development, and process improvement initiatives. You’ll collaborate cross-functionally and contribute to impactful projects across the full product lifecycle.
Essential Job Functions
- Develop CAD models, assemblies and drawings for CNC machinists, and design change orders.
- Conduct development testing of pressure and load products in a lab environment.
- Create product documentation change orders to revise / release bills of materials.
- Learn and use SolidWorks PDM to manage engineering documentation.
- Participate in A3PS initiative to reduce scrap by evaluating products to determine root cause of issues.
- Use 3D printing equipment to build prototype parts and test fixtures.
- Prepare reports concerning project specifications, test data, completed activities, or updating current status.
- Evaluate products for cost and cost out initiatives.
Requirements
Essential/Preferred Skills:
- Enrolled as a full-time student in a two-year or four-year college or university program. A major in Mechanical Engineering, or related technical field, is strongly preferred.
- Basic knowledge of 2D and 3D mechanical design using CAD software such as SolidWorks or similar design tools.
- Foundational understanding of mechanical engineering principles gained through coursework, laboratory work, or academic projects.
- Ability to read and interpret basic engineering drawings and technical documentation.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate in a team environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for documentation and analysis.
- Eagerness to learn, take initiative, and apply classroom knowledge to real-world engineering projects.
Role Competencies
- CAD & Mechanical Design: Demonstrates knowledge of 2D and 3D CAD engineering design software and an understanding of engineering materials and their properties.
- Engineering Documentation: Familiarity with digital engineering filing systems, engineering workflows, and engineering change/update processes.
- Technical Analysis: Ability to evaluate test data and prepare clear summary reports.
- Technical Drawings: Ability to read, interpret, and work from mechanical drawings and engineering documentation.
- GD&T Knowledge: Working understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Communication: Communicates effectively both verbally and in writing, providing updates on project or task status to supervisors and team members.
- Dependability: Follows instructions, responds to management direction, takes responsibility for assigned tasks, and completes work on time or communicates alternative plans when needed.
- Engineering Knowledge: Understanding engineering design techniques, tools, and principles used in the creation of technical drawings, models, and product documentation.
- Initiative & Learning: Demonstrates curiosity, seeks opportunities to learn, and is willing to take on a variety of tasks and responsibilities.
- Planning & Organization: Prioritizes work effectively, manages time efficiently, and supports team goals and organizational procedures.
Work Conditions and Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work in an office environment and sit for extended periods while using a computer workstation.
- Frequent use of a computer, keyboard, mouse, and multiple monitors for engineering designing and documentation tasks.
- Ability to view detailed technical drawings and work with precise visual information.
- Occasionally stand, walk, or move between office areas, meeting rooms, or engineering workspaces.
- May occasionally visit manufacturing areas while following all required safety procedures and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) if required.
- Ability to communicate effectively with team members in person, virtually, and via written communication.
- Ability to lift and carry light materials or documents (typically up to 10–15 lbs.) if needed.
