About the Role

Position Summary

Rocky Mountain Communities’ (RMC) Real Estate Internship will provide a college student with direct, hands-on experience with affordable housing development involving project research, financial analysis, site due diligence, and meeting/coordination with Real Estate Department and other RMC departments (e.g. Property Management Department and Finance Department) to learn the full lifecycle of multi-family affordable housing development.


This internship allows a college student to directly impact real estate projects while building skills that are critical for a career as a Real Estate Developer or Analyst. The internship goal will be to help the individual gain the potential for full-time employment or advanced opportunities in commercial or residential real estate development industry upon college graduation


Key Responsibilities May Include:

  • Conducting market research and site due diligence for potential development opportunities, including evaluating locations, zoning, and feasibility
  • Assisting with financial modeling, cash-low analysis, and proforma evaluations to assess project viability. 
  • Supporting project management by tracking development budgets, schedules, and vendor interactions
  • Attending development meetings, documenting discussions, and preparing reports or presentation materials for internal or external stakeholders
  • Assisting with permitting, regulatory filings, and understanding government fees related to construction projects
  • Performing administrative tasks such as updating project databases, coordinating contracts, or tracking invioces. 
  • Shadowing property managers or construction teams to observe leasing, turnovers, compliance, or construction take-ofs

Qualifications and Education:

  • Current student enrolled in the MSU Denver Afordable Housing Institute and/ or pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Real Estate, Finance, Business Administration, Public Administration, Construction Management, Architecture, or a related field.
  • Strong academic performance, with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Excellent analytical, financial, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Ofice, Excel modeling, and familiarity with industry software such as Yardi or Smartsheets is advantageous.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and work in fast-paced environments while meeting deadlines.

Skills Development: Interns will acquire practical skills in:

  • Financial analysis and underwriting of development opportunities
  • Market research, site evaluation, and competitive analysis
  • Project management worklows and coordination across multiple departments
  • Interaction with contractors, architects, financiers, and government agencies
  • Exposure to real-world real estate investment and portfolio management processes

Internship Expectations:

  1. Commitment generally ranges from 10–20 hours per week, in ofice 2 days per week
  2. Duration can span a summer session (minimum 8 weeks) or multiple semesters, providing a deeper understanding of real estate development
  3. Internships may be paid and provide mentorship from industry experts
  4. Ideal candidates demonstrate curiosity, professionalism, accountability, and a proactive approach to learning.
    Operates in a professional office environment at Rocky Mountain Communities 
    This role routinely uses standard ofice equipment, such as a computer, photocopiers and telephones.
