The Role

The Skillbridge intern will train as a Fire Marshal within Ingalls Shipbuilding, reporting to a designated HII Fire Prevention Manager, with the goal of learning fire prevention and hot work basics and principles. The intern will be assigned special projects as needed.

 

Desired End State (3-4 month target)

At the end of four months, the intern will be able to navigate naval vessels, identify hazards associated with hot work and perform hot work permit inspections of in-process and pre-authorized hot work.

  • The intern will develop a good understanding of the inspection process. This includes:
    • Monitoring conditions of ships to identify fire hazards.
    • Learning to work from ship layout (CNA) drawings and identify affected surrounding compartments.
    • Documenting ship conditions and hot work-related data.
    • Paying strong attention to detail of inspection instructions and checklists
  • Ingalls Shipbuilding will benefit from the military background of the Skill bridge intern and will consider the Skill bridge internship an overall positive experience.

 

Assumptions/Restrictions

  • If candidate is selected and approved, Skillbridge Intern can travel in conjunction with this internship; HII Ingalls will fund all travel costs.
  • Skillbridge Intern will possess at minimum an Active confidential Security Clearance.
  • Skillbridge Intern will be available during core hours for critical meetings and training.

  • Week 3: Fire Marshal Policies & Procedures
  • Week 4: Inspection Tools & Documentation

 

Phase 2 – Vessel Understanding

  • Week 5: LPD not launched
  • Week 6: DDG not launched
  • Week 7: LHA not launched
  • Week 8: Overhaul not launched
  • Week 9: LPD in the Water
  • Week 10: DDG in the Water
  • Week 11: LHA in the Water
  • Week 12: Overhaul in Water & Solo Inspection

Must Have

Must be a transitioning active-duty military personnel within your final 12 months of active duty service.
