BRC is one of New York City's largest providers of housing and services for individuals experiencing homelessness. Founded in 1971 by a group of recovering alcoholics living in poverty in the Bowery’s infamous flophouses, these individuals had hope, and a firm belief that better days lay ahead. BRC serves nearly 13,000 individuals each year, operating more than 30 programs throughout the greater metropolitan area. The organization’s robust continuum of housing and services includes over 3,700 units of transitional and permanent housing; outreach and case management programs; and substance use and medical services. About the Role

Job Summary:

Bowery Residents’ Committee (BRC) is seeking a qualified summer intern to join its Asset Management department, who can assist in various aspects of the management of BRC’s real estate portfolio. The portfolio consists of buildings, both owned and leased, in New York City. The intern will work with the VP of Asset Management who will provide mentorship throughout the internship duration.

 

Through this internship opportunity, interns are encouraged to learn about the workings of BRC and gain an understanding of the asset management of its various buildings. The intern should be prepared to work in a team setting and coordinate with various departments. At the end of the internship, be able to gain a broad understanding of the physical and financial aspects of managing real estate.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Under the guidance of the VP of Asset Management, work with facility managers of different buildings to corroborate asset breakdowns of major building systems.
  • Project required future capital work at BRC buildings through site visits with VP Asset Management and other data made available on the various buildings.
  • Assist in managing the compliance requirements for the buildings including but not limited to the NYC building and sustainability Local Laws.
  • Analyze current energy and water conservation initiatives at various buildings, and at the end of the internship create a presentation showcasing the results.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with staff from various departments including but not limited to Facilities, IT and Finance.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled in a college degree program at an accredited institution and have completed junior year of college.
  • Be able to work onsite at the BRC head office in Manhattan, NY.
  • Pursuing degree in areas including real estate development, commercial real estate, property management, affordable housing, sustainability or a related field.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Passionate to learn about real estate asset management.
  • Highly self-motivated, hardworking, detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task.
  • Strong communications skills (verbal, written and listening).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Any previous internship experience or volunteer work with homeless services is a plus but not required

Hours:

  • 22.5 hours per week (3 days a week)
