About The Company
Fraunhofer IGD is the international leading institute for applied research in visual computing. Visual computing is image- and model-based information technology and includes computer graphics and computer vision, as well as virtual and augmented reality. In simple terms, the Fraunhofer researchers in Darmstadt, Rostock, and Kiel are turning information into images and extracting information from images. In cooperation with its partners, technical solutions and market-relevant products are created. Prototypes and integrated solutions are developed in accordance with customized requirements. In doing so, Fraunhofer IGD places users at the forefront, providing them with technical solutions to facilitate computer work and make it more efficient. Owing to its numerous innovations, Fraunhofer IGD raises man-machine interaction to a new level. Man is able to work in a more result-oriented and effective way by means of the computer and visual computing developments.
About the Role

With its focus on future-relevant key technologies and the utilization of results in economy and industry, the Fraunhofer Society plays a central role in the innovation process. As a guide and source of inspiration for innovative developments and scientific excellence, it contributes to shaping our society and our future.

For over 35 years, the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology in Berlin has stood for excellence in production science. We are dedicated to bridging the gap between science and practice in the field of industrial production and offer application-oriented system solutions for the entire spectrum of industrial tasks – from product development to the production process, maintenance of capital goods, and recycling of products to the design and management of factory operations.

In our department Machine Vision, we are revolutionizing industrial quality assurance through AI-based approaches to automating manual optical inspection. Our focus is on making anomaly detection methods available for complex testing scenarios and reducing the manual effort involved in creating training data. By using innovative clustering methods for the automated restoration of defect labels, we are driving forward the automation of 100% testing.

Be part of change

We work together as a team to transfer our findings from research projects into industrial projects. You can actively participate in the development and implementation of innovative ideas in the context of AI-based industrial image processing. The focus is on automating the manual inspection of manufactured goods – ranging from potatoes to painted car body parts.

  • You will take on a wide range of tasks, from strategic enhancements to our AI methods to research and conducting experiments to day-to-day project work
  • You will implement state-of-the-art methods from science and technology and combine them to evaluate solutions for given problems
  • You will work with our demonstrators and acquisition systems for the digitization of industrial goods and develop them further in collaboration with your colleagues
  • Depending on your interests, your focus will be on the optimization of 1) defect cluster methods or 2) the segmentation and tracking of industrial goods

The internship can lead to a thesis. It is also possible to continue working as a student assistant after the internship.

What you contribute

  • You are currently a student majoring in computer science, artificial intelligence, image processing, or a similar field, and are looking for an internship in accordance with your examination regulations
  • You have an analytical approach, creativity, and a healthy dose of curiosity
  • You prefer to work in a team, but can also take responsibility on your own or (in the future) take the helm
