About the Role

Position Summary: 


The Summer Internship Program offers students work experience and professional guidance in several areas of the organization. Interns contribute to projects that support departmental work, develop new skills, and gain insight into their career interests. Interns will have the opportunity to explore behind the scenes of Battery Park City Authority’s innovative vision and design, complex public space management, leadership in sustainable practices, and commitment to outstanding public resources.

 

Essential Duties:

 

The Community Partnership and Public Art Intern will play a key role in facilitating Battery Park City Authority’s many community partnership programs as well as help prepare for two major Public Art installations later this year. They will support the department’s coordination with artists and their studios. In addition, the intern will support the department’s ongoing public art archival and documentation project.

 

The Community Partnership and Public Art Intern will, using our physical and digital public art archives, manage our Artwork Archive database as part of an ongoing initiative to modernize our collection stewardship. The intern will communicate with world-class artists and learn about how public entities acquire and manage art collections.

 

A wide variety of programs and events are offered throughout the summer outdoors in the parks and indoors in managed community spaces of Battery Park City. Given the timing of BPCA’s public programs and events, the intern must be flexible and spontaneous regarding their availability which may include evenings and weekends.


During the busy Summer programming season, the intern would also provide on-site staff support and incidental administrative and planning support to the diverse array of public programs taking place during their internship.


Under the guidance of the Assistant Director of Community Partnerships and Public Art, the intern will curate an exhibition on the history of public art in Battery Park City Authority. The exhibition will be public facing and present research and historic materials from Battery Park City Authority’s archives. This exhibition may be used for future promotions.


Additional Responsibilities include:

 

  • Take an active role loading, transporting, and unloading supplies, etc. at programs and events 
  • Organize and digitize archival public art material
  • Administrative coordination internally and with external partners and artists
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Education and Skills:


  • Enrolled in Relevant Degree Program (Art, Art History, Education, Library Sciences, or related discipline) and/or minimum 2 years relevant experience
  • Demonstrated academic, interpretative, and/or editorial writing skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Experience and willingness to work with people of all cultures, abilities and experience
  • Experience managing databases or archives
  • Experience producing or performing a plus


Physical Requirements: 

 

  • Able and willing to work outdoors in all types of weather
  • Ability to lift and carry 35+ lbs. preferred
