CAMP Counselor in Training 

Internship Description/Learning Objectives:

 

Each member of the Adventure Science Center team is expected to deliver consistent, high-quality service with enthusiasm, professionalism, and respect for all ASC guests. The Summer Camp Internship provides hands-on, dynamic opportunities to support and implement innovative, active programming for summer camp participants while developing skills in teamwork, communication, and STEM-based education.

 

Job Duties:

 

 

The Counselor in Training (CIT) supports the daily operations of the camp and youth programs department. This role is designed to provide hands-on experience in program coordination, administration, and youth services while learning how programs serve children and families.

 

Core Responsibilities:

  • Actively supervise and interact with campers, facilitating activities and experiments with a focus on STEM content.
  • Offer support to lead counselors in planning and executing daily camp activities.
  • Lead at least one camp activity in the camp curriculum per week under the guidance of lead camp counselor.
  • Participate in a weekly evaluation to support personal growth and skill development.
  • Encourage a positive and exciting learning environment, fostering curiosity and a love of STEM.
  • Assist with classroom and camp area set-up and tear-down, including organizing materials for each day and daily cleanup.
  • Support camper behavior needs by encouraging positive interactions and promoting a safe, respectful environment.
  • Utilize creativity, innovation, and inspiration while facilitating camp activities.
  • Serve as a positive role model by promoting a safe and respectful environment for all campers.
  • Assist in emergency and evacuation situations as needed.
  • Always Maintain focus and attention on campers; personal phones and electronic devices are not permitted while supervising children.

**Cell Phone Requirement: Due to the importance of maintaining a safe environment, no phones are allowed while directly supervising children. Phones must be put away in work locker or cubby while on the floor**

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to lead activities and engage campers in a positive, energetic manner.
  • Responsible, reliable, and able to follow directions and safety protocols.

By the end of the internship, the Counselor in Training (CIT) Intern will gain experience in:

  • Assisting with planning, setup, and cleanup of daily camp activities.

General Information:

Work Schedule Days and Hours:

 

Monday – Thursday; 8:45am- 3:15pm (30-minute unpaid lunch break is included)

Dress Code:

 

ASC uniform shirt (provided) 

 

Bottoms: Solid colored pants or shorts. Shorts must be 2 inches above the knee. Leggings, yoga pants or sleepwear are not permitted. 

 

Shoes: Closed toed shoes or tennis shoes. Flip-flops, sandals, or open-back shoes are not permitted. 

 

Hats: Hats or head coverings may be worn only for job-related or approved purposes. On hot summer days, hats or visors may be worn outside only and must be removed before entering the inside work environment. Bonnets durags, and sleep caps are not permitted. 

 

Clothing must be clean, neat, and free of rips, tears, or inappropriate graphics or language. Attire should be comfortable and allow for ease of movement while performing job duties. Personal hygiene must be maintained to support a professional and welcoming environment. Weather-appropriate outerwear may be worn, provided it does not restrict movement or visibility. Jewelry should be minimal and suitable for an active work environment; dangling or hazardous accessories are not permitted.

 

During camp, there may be occasional Spirit Week activities that allow for variations from the typical work dress code. Interns are welcome to participate, provided their attire and participation do not interfere with their ability to perform job duties, and all dress code requirements are still met.

Physical Requirements:

 

This role typically involves walking, standing, bending, and carrying light items (up to 20 pounds unassisted, or up to 50 pounds with assistance). 

Working Conditions: (example: Office Warehouse, Outdoors, with Children or Animals, etc.)

 

Work is primarily indoors in classroom and camp settings, with frequent outdoor activities. Camp takes place during the museum’s normal business hours, so interns may occasionally interact with general admission guests. Daily recess is part of the camp schedule, and interns will spend at least 30–40 minutes outdoors each day, including during summer heat.

 

The full program is June 1st – July 17th   

June 1st – June 3rd:   Interns attend work readiness skills training from 8am – 12pm.

June 4th:                      Attend employer orientation meeting.

June 5th:                      POWER Youth Summit at Sheraton Music City Nashville Airport

June 9th – July 17th:   Youth will report to their employer worksite location on Monday – 

                                       Thursday or special schedule workday at the time 

                                        scheduled by employer.  You will be scheduled to work 6.5 hours daily

                                      which equals 24 hours per week.

 

Friday Co-Horts:            Youth report to cohort sessions at assigned locations at 8:00am to 

12:00noon on Fridays.

If you are selected as a High School Intern, you will make $15.00 an hour and receive pre-program training and coaching to ensure you have the skills you need on the job. Interns are responsible for providing their own transportation to all orientation, training, worksite, and cohort times. The POWER Youth program, previously known as Opportunity NOW, provides career exploration and work experience activities for youth 14 to 24 years old. The name POWER Youth was selected by the peer youth leadership team based on how they view themselves and their future.
