Moffatt & Nichol specializes in large complex waterfront infrastructure projects and is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in this field. We are looking for a Waterfront Inspection & Rehabilitation Engineering Intern to join our New York City office. As the successful new hire, you will be available to commence employment in April 2026. The ideal candidate will remain with us throughout the upcoming academic year.
You will work with our NY dive team to assist in the inspections of marine structures and ports. In the office, you will assist with the follow-on report preparation, development of structural repair designs, perform high-level analysis and design. In the field, you will perform topside (above water) inspections and assist field activities, equipment maintenance related to inspection tools on land and via boat. You will support inspections of large marine terminals, ports, wharves and more!

Duties and responsibilities:

- Assist with the development of plans, specifications, and cost estimates as needed to support waterfront infrastructure repair and rehabilitation work
- Help resolve design problems that may include performing field investigation or inspections, detailed design work, and detailed checking of design computations done by others, or general coordination of specific design aspects into a project
- Perform construction inspections above water and topside with the I&R team, confirming repair progress aligns with construction documents. Draft construction inspection letter reports to clear communicate findings with the contractor
- Calculate construction quantity estimates
- Perform analysis, design, asset management, and inspection of waterfront structures, and other maritime projects
- Structural analysis and design with timber, steel, concrete and composite materials
- Develop plans, specifications, and calculations as needed
- Work closely with other disciplines including architects, engineers, scientists, project managers, etc. on multi-discipline projects
- Office construction administration including review of shop drawings and technical submittals
- Assist with the preparation of inspection reports
- Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
- Must be in pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program that is eligible for both a future EIT certification and Professional Engineer licensure
- Must be entering the final year of a qualified Bachelor’s degree program following the summer of employment
- Availability to work on site and remain employed throughout the upcoming academic year are a must
- Previous employment in design or outdoor work is required
- Demonstrated hands‑on experience with mechanical tools, equipment, or systems for building, assembling, or repairing required
- Avid outdoor enthusiast with strong passion for water activities required
- Ability to perform field investigations is required
- Preferred experience using the following software:
- AutoCAD
- Bluebeam
- Mathcad
- SAP2000
- LPile
- Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation)
- Valid driver’s license in good standing and personal transportation required
- Possession of or eligibility to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)
- Selected candidate must consent to and pass a post-offer/pre-employment drug screening
- All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Physical requirements:
Office and field work required. based. Field work may necessitate climbing, navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment. Field work includes exposure to extreme heat, cold or inclement weather. Office work may be sedentary for prolonged periods of time and requires the ability to use standard office equipment.
Base salary range:
$30.00 to $35.00 per hour based on years of experience, level of education obtained, professional registration, and meeting the required qualifications in the job description.
Base salary range only applicable for candidates who will be hired and working in the New York City market.
