About the Role

Department Overview:

Four Winds Farm is a working permaculture farm and event center focused on regenerative growing practices and long-term land stewardship. The event center hosts a variety of private and pubic events throughout the year including weddings, celebrations of life, work gatherings, agricultural classes, and large community events like their annual summer food truck festival.  

The property sits on 86 acres of restores prairie, oak savannah, and farmable land. Primary crops include hops, Kernza perennial grain, chestnuts, and pastureland for a flock of 30 dual purpose sheep.

Schedule:

8am -4 pm. Flexibility for select days and times if working less than 40 hours/week. Four Winds farming staff is on property 8-5 Monday-Friday.  

Bonus if candidate has Saturday morning availability. 

Salary/Wage Range:

Hourly $20.00 to $20.00

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Dates: April – September 30, 2026 

Hours: 32-40 hours per week, seasonal position that runs from April to September 2026.  

Compensation: $20/hour 

Job Description:  

The horticulture intern will work directly with the Assistant Farm Manager and Farm Manager to ensure that the Four Winds property and outdoor venues are cared for and kept in great condition. They will engage in a variety of tasks that support the health and harvest of agricultural crops. They will work to preserve or establish landscaped and natural areas on the Four Winds property. The position will include significant manual labor to complete horticultural tasks. We’re looking for someone who is self-motivated, organized, and a fast learner.  

Desired Skills:  

  • Ability to use hand-tools including garden shears, rakes, shovels, and hoes.  

  • Ability to work independently and efficiently 

  • Basic plant identification skills and prior experience with plants 

Responsibilities:  

  • Planting out flower beds and annual gardens 

  • Assisting in maintenance of hopyards and hop plant health 

  • Including: Stringing hopyards, weeding, participating in hop harvest 

  • Observing, documenting, and responding to tree health 

  • Taking notes, watering, and mulching around chestnut trees, windbreak trees, and orchard trees 

  • Watering annual and perennial gardens 

  • Harvesting produce and  

  • Landscaping around outdoor wedding venues and community areas, including routine weeding and deadheading 

  • Other project-based tasks that will be assigned as they come up throughout the season. 

Qualifications:

Basic plant identification abilities and experience working with plants. Desire and ability to work up to 8 hour days outside doing manual labor tasks including weeding, raking, shoveling. Ability to lift objects up to 50 lbs.
