About the Role

Description

Westwood Professional Services, Inc. is seeking a Geoscientist Intern to join our team. The successful job applicant will be supervised by our Lead Geophysicist and work with members of our remote sensing, geospatial field services, and geotechnical engineering teams. The intern will assist senior geophysical and geotechnical staff with project work involving various aspects of geophysics and geotechnical engineering related to renewable energy and other power-related projects. Work elements may involve some or all the following: geophysical and geotechnical investigation field work, geophysical data processing, and report preparation. Westwood has a highly experienced and dynamic team of individuals dedicated to providing high-level professional services to our clients. 

Requirements

 Job Duties:

• Acquire Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) data in the field, process the data, and interpret subsurface features of interest including underground utilities.

• Process aerial magnetometer data, review aerial video footage, and interpret subsurface magnetic anomalies. 

• Perform electrical resistivity tests using 4-pin Wenner array.

• Lead on-site coordination and execution of geotechnical site investigations by managing drilling subcontractors, logging soil samples, and performing geotechnical testing.

• Participate in the preparation of geophysical and geotechnical reports.

• Keep management advised of work status, workload, problems, and progress as related to work assignments.


Skills and Qualifications:

• Enrolled in a B.S. or M.S. program in geological sciences or geotechnical engineering. Related work experience is a plus.

• Knowledge of geophysical equipment and processing techniques, specifically for GPR and magnetometer studies.

• Familiarity with geotechnical engineering fundamentals and geotechnical testing

• Strong technical, communication and interpersonal skills and works best in a fast-paced environment. 

• Detailed documentation focus and sound technical writing skills.

• Valid driver’s license with favorable driving record.

• Ability to travel and work in the field for extended periods (up to 4 weeks).

• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and various terrains associated with undeveloped sites and active construction projects.

• Ability to pay close attention to detail and check the quality of own work.

• Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing in English.

• Ability to use sound judgment.

• Ability to manage time and workload effectively, which includes planning, organizing and prioritizing with attention to details.

• Proficiency in MS Office. Knowledge of Oasis Montaj, ArcGIS, QGIS, Auto CAD is an asset. Familiarity of other geophysical and geotechnical software is also a plus.
