Position Purpose
Under the direct supervision of the Lab Director and Lab Manager, the Student Laboratory Technician supports day-to-day anatomy laboratory operations and teaching activities across M1, M3, and M4 settings. This role focuses on laboratory setup, maintenance, inventory, safety compliance, and logistical support for scheduled labs, open lab hours, donor related laboratory activities, and skills workshops. Primary support is for preclerkship laboratory sessions, CUSM electives and outreach activities. 

Essential Functions

  • Prepare laboratory spaces for scheduled sessions, including station setup, room readiness checks, and reset between groups.
  • Support laboratory instruction by providing technical and operational assistance during sessions, including station troubleshooting and efficient reset between groups. 
  • Assist the Lab Manager with laboratory setup, routine maintenance, and donor deliveries and pickups when needed.
  • Handle donors and human tissue specimens in accordance with lab policy, maintaining privacy, respect, and donor protection at all times.
  • Maintain laboratory safety standards, including PPE availability, sharps and biohazard workflow support, and adherence to the laboratory safety manual.
  • Perform routine cleaning and disinfection of teaching spaces and equipment after sessions, including spill response per protocol when trained.
  • Track, receive, label, store, and restock laboratory supplies, and report shortages and damaged equipment to lab leadership.
  • Maintain basic documentation and logs as assigned, including setup checklists, cleaning logs, inventory tracking, and incident reporting.
  • Support open lab hours by monitoring access, enforcing safety rules, assisting with station resets, and escalating issues to lab staff. This position is not a primary tutoring role unless separately assigned.
  • Assist with preparation and tear down for elective courses and workshops, including SURG 8411 and the Intern Prep Course, under direction of the Anatomy team.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Educational Qualifications

  • Enrollment as a current CUSM student in good academic standing.
  • Completion of required institutional safety trainings before independent work, including laboratory safety and any required biosafety and chemical safety training, or willingness to complete prior to start.


Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to follow written protocols, checklists, and safety procedures with consistency.
  • Comfortable handling donors, plastinated material, and laboratory specimens with a high degree of respect, privacy, and professionalism.
  • Familiarity with basic anatomy laboratory workflows, or ability to learn quickly with supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail, strong reliability, and consistent availability aligned to lab schedules.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with students, faculty, and staff, and to escalate issues promptly.
  • Ability to balance the needs of multiple learners and concurrent lab tasks during busy sessions.
  • Willingness to assist with laboratory maintenance, including deep cleaning, monitoring for repairs, and learning safety equipment locations and use.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and basic email and Teams communication.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold donor and student privacy expectations. 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior completion of a gross anatomy laboratory experience is preferred, or demonstrated comfort working in a laboratory environment.
  • Previous experience working with cadaveric donors or human tissue specimens.
  • Previous experience as a laboratory assistant, TA, student worker, or tutor in a laboratory setting.
  • Prior work in anatomy, histology, pathology, microbiology, physiology, or immunology laboratory environments.
  • Experience with inventory tracking, supply ordering support, or equipment checkout systems.

This includes PPE, pushing or pulling carts, lifting and carrying materials, cleaning and disinfecting products, dissection and demonstration tools, and basic audiovisual and microscopy equipment as assigned. Fine motor work for setup, labeling, and specimen handling.
