About the Role
Overview

Intellectual Property Exchange (IPX) works with Auburn researchers to provide expertise, guidance, and support for the protection and public adoption of the intellectual property (IP) they create. The Intellectual Property Exchange also facilitates the licensing of that intellectual property to partners capable of developing it further and bringing it to the marketplace for public benefit. Student Interns assist Intellectual Property Exchange in these efforts and gain skills in intellectual property, business development, marketing, and related areas.

Responsibilities

Interns will assist Intellectual Property Exchange Licensing Officers in assessing the protectability and market potential of Auburn Innovations to identify commercial partners to translate the Innovation into a product or service. Interns will learn about assessing and protecting intellectual property, technology transfer at a university, and considerations for advancing intellectual property from initial conception to the marketplace. These and other skills translate well to careers in or outside of academia, including applied research, early-stage product development, business or economic development, patent law, management consulting/analyst, technology transfer, and more. Interns may also have opportunities to attend training opportunities such as courses similar to the NSF I-Corps Program.

Interns will perform a variety of projects involving AI-assisted tools, such as:

  • Patentability/Protectability assessments
  • Commercial assessments, competitive landscape research, and overall technology evaluation
  • Development and support of a marketing campaign
  • Custom projects as needed

Periodic in-person meetings and training are required. Interested in examples of Auburn innovations you might work with? Visit the Auburn marketplace.
