GENERAL STATEMENT
Under the general supervision and direction of the Assistant Director, Beach Pantry Programs, the Beach Pantry Student Lead is responsible for the daily operations of the ASI Beach Pantry Programs, including the ASI Beach Kitchen and mobile Pantry throughout the year with duties including, but not limited to maintaining inventory, assisting customers, and supervising staffs & volunteers. The Beach Pantry Student Lead will assist in various duties as assigned, both technical and professional in a part-time capacity, to gain practical experience through pantry and kitchen programming.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Facilitates and oversees regular operations of the ASI Beach Pantry programs, including the ASI Beach Kitchen and mobile pantry.
- Assist with the recruitment, hiring, training, development, and supervision of Beach Pantry program staff.
- Attending all meetings, retreats, and training courses as directed. Assist the Beach Pantry/Kitchen Coordinator with agendas and materials for various staff meetings and assist in leading staff meetings.
- Develop and implement outreach plan to promote Beach Pantry/Kitchen services and engage campus community.
- Maintain records and reports of Beach Pantry programs.
- Greets and assists students who utilize the ASI Beach Pantry programs with excellent customer service. Assists students with item selection.
- Provides a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere while maintaining confidentiality and respect of students utilizing the ASI Beach Pantry programs and services.
- Provides for the clean, safe, and efficient operation of the ASI Beach Pantry areas.
- Monitors and maintains inventory. Keeps food pantry shelves stocked during distribution hours.
- Uses CSULB Events & Orgs website and Pantry Soft to track general usage of pantry areas.
- Works with ASI Beach Pantry volunteers in coordination with Assistant Director, which includes training, planning and providing for duties.
- Assists with food drives and contacts vendors for donations. Assists with campus wide pick-ups and distribution bins.
- Meet weekly with the Assistant Director and Kitchen Lead to help create/update training programs and materials for student staff and discuss weekly job tasks.
- Attend and table at special events throughout the year to outreach for ASI Beach Pantry programs including corporate wide programs as needed.
- Assists Beach Pantry staff with presentations about the pantry/kitchen to the campus community as needed.
- Refers students to additional campus resources as needed. Offers information about the campus and to guests.
- Assist in day-to-day pantry operations, including but not limited to greet and assists students who utilize the ASI Beach Pantry programs, monitoring and maintaining inventory, keeping food pantry shelves stocked during distribution hours.
- Works on special projects as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists with the supervision of volunteers during the shift. May provide break and meal period relief for student assistants and/or volunteers in other program or service areas during the shift.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and/or Experience
Must have at least one year of work-related experience in food service, kitchen, or restaurant. Must be enrolled at California State University, Long Beach in at least six units and make satisfactory progress in related degree program. Experience on windows-based personal computers using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Publisher and PowerPoint. Ability to multi-task and manage time effectively. Previous experience and/or specialized education is preferred for employment.
Knowledge and Abilities
This position requires a high level of skill and the ability to acquire substantial technical competence. Applicant must be able to take initiative, be responsible and correct errors as needed. Must be a quick learner with the ability to assess situations and make sound, independent decisions. Ability to perform complex tasks without detailed supervision. Must also have strong presentation skills and the ability to speak, write and effectively communicate fluently in English. Good public relations skills are necessary.
Certificates, Licenses or Registrations
- Food Handler Certification or ability to complete this certification contingent upon employment.
- California Driver's License necessary as incumbent will drive university vehicles as needed including ASI carts, van and/or truck.
- Additional certifications and trainings may be required and must be completed within the first 30 days of employment.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to interpret and carry out ASI policy as it relates to the activities of individuals or groups utilizing the Food Pantry. Position requires that the incumbent be patient, trustworthy, dedicated, and responsive to student need. Employees must have strong customer service skills, be outgoing, be adaptable to last-minute changes and have the ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people and personalities.
Schedule
Must be available to work evenings and weekends during the academic year. Hours during summer and winter breaks are to be determined by supervisor.

The employee is regularly required to use hands to utilize a computer keyboard, operate cash registers, troubleshoot equipment, etc. The employee is occasionally required to sit at a desk; reach with hands and arms to store and retrieve supplies; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally move or lift up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock from operation of audiovisual equipment, and vibration resulting from loud noises at rock concerts, movies, etc. Otherwise, the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
