About the Role

The Active Living Intern will support the physical activity, active transportation, and bicycle and pedestrian safety initiatives and programs through the Boston Public Health Commission's (BPHC) Chronic Disease Prevention and Control Division.

 

Our program seeks an undergraduate student intern to provide ongoing support to the Active Living Program at the BPHC. Tasks for this internship may include:

  • Attend Boston Parks Fitness Series classes and provide technical support to fitness instructors
  • Track participation and other data for the Parks Fitness Series
  • Promoting the Boston Parks Fitness Series through multiple forms of community outreach, including attending community-organized events and delivering promotional materials to partner sites
  • Support community planning, outreach, and engagement activities focused on active transportation (walking and biking)
  • Support BPHC staff wellness program with specific recommendations regarding physical activity/physical health
  • Provide technical assistance for all Activity Living projects including collaboration with Boston Public Schools, Parks and Recreation Department, and Boston

 

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how to develop, implement, and improve equitable physical activity programming
  • Develop communication and community engagement skills for promoting physical activity programs and policy changes
  • Learn how policy, system, and environmental changes can encourage physical activity through community design
  • Understand how social determinants of health can negatively impact a person's activity level and overall health
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree student in a program that requires an internship

Required Competencies:

  • Familiarity with health equity and anti-racism principles and an interest in centering these principles in chronic disease prevention and control
  • Flexibility and comfort with working independently and accepting mentorship, coaching, and feedback.
  • Curiosity and interest in developing skills in community outreach and engagement and promoting health equity.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and work as part of the team.

 

Preferred skills:

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite including MS Teams, MS Outlook
  • Experience working with diverse communities, especially in the city of Boston. Bilingual students strongly encouraged to apply.
  • This internship is especially well-suited for students in the following areas of study: Public Health (General and Health Promotion), Sociology, Urban Planning, Exercise Science
