About The Company
General Dynamics NASSCO-Norfolk is the consolidation of two great ship repair yards that have operated in the Port of Hampton Roads, Virginia for more than 50 years. The former Metro Machine Corporation was founded in 1963, awarded its first Master Ship Repair Agreement (MSRA) contract with the U.S. Navy in 1966, moved to the Ligon Street yard in 1971, and was acquired by General Dynamics NASSCO in 2011. Since its inception, the Ligon Street workforce has worked on more than 450 ships. The former Earl Industries was founded in 1985, moved to the Harper Avenue yard in 2004, and was acquired by General Dynamics NASSCO in August, 2012. The Harper Avenue workforce has been maintaining and repairing aircraft carriers and ships of the Navy's amphibious fleet, including the LPD-17 Class of amphibious transport dock ships, since 2005. SUMMARY
NASSCO’s Spring Engineering internship program provides candidates with the opportunity to work within an identified department based on school curriculum and prior experience. Candidates will be initially assigned to an engineering group based on need, skills, and interests but may rotate to other engineering departments as needed. Candidates should expect to spend time in both an office and manufacturing environment. Interns report on-site in San Diego, CA.  

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

  • As an engineering intern at General Dynamics NASSCO you will be responsible for assisting naval architects and marine engineering with their current projects. These projects range from the initial design of future vessels to the final outfitting of nearly completed ships. In the execution of these projects you will be tasked with creating and modifying CAD drawings, performing research using both online and printed resources, and using a variety of software to perform stability and structural calculations.
  • You will also accompany senior naval architects to support shipboard inspections and testing.
  • Reports to department manager/supervisor on a regular basis to monitor status of assigned projects..

 

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Successful candidates must be currently enrolled (full-time) 
  • An interest and/or prior work experience in ship design, shipbuilding, construction management and manufacturing processes would be advantageous.
  • Proficiency in personal computer (PC) word processing, spreadsheets and graphics, as well as computer-aided design and engineering (CAD/CAE) systems, is desirable.
  • Must have ability to express ideas in oral and written formats and demonstrate a high degree of personal flexibility.

 

POSITION DEMANDS
The essential functions of this role require work in both an office and industrial setting. The role requires prolonged periods of working in a stationary position, operating a computer, computer programs, and standard office equipment necessary to perform the essential duties. The role requires perceiving information and communicating effectively with others in person, online, and on the phone. The role also requires prolonged periods of working in indoor and outdoor industrial settings.  Must have the ability to safely access, navigate, and traverse the shipyard, construction areas, production areas, ships, and warehouses. Must be able to transit uneven surfaces, and be agile to move quickly to avoid hazards and respond to unexpected obstacles. Must be able to observe, detect, identify, perceive, recognize, and process information to remain alert and timely comply with all safety requirements. Must be able to move, transport, and use equipment necessary to perform the essential duties. Duties performed on ships require ascending and descending stairs and ladders, transiting on scaffolding and at heights, transiting through manholes and other narrow, confined, or congested spaces. This position requires exposure to industrial areas which contain hazardous materials, loud noise (including sirens, horns, chipping, slamming, and hammering), dust, fumes, and exposure to weather.  

 

Pay Rate

$35.38 per hour
