Department Overview

Applied Technology Services (ATS) is a multidisciplinary organization that provides innovative, technology‑based engineering, testing, and analysis services to support PG&E business units. ATS supports asset risk management, failure analysis, wildfire mitigation, and equipment performance across Transmission, Distribution, Generation, and Gas operations.

 

Position Summary

The Fire Engineer Intern will work under the guidance of senior engineers to support proactive engineering solutions for PG&E. This position provides hands‑on exposure to asset risk management, materials and failure analysis, and electrical engineering through laboratory and field-based work.

The intern will support investigations related to ignition, thermal damage, and fire hazards involving electrical equipment (e.g., circuit breakers, transformers, switches) and hardware (e.g., conductors, connectors, insulators). The role includes participation in testing, inspection, data analysis, and technical report development.

 

The intern will primarily support summer rapid failure analysis efforts, performing inspection, analysis, and reporting for projects involving fire hazard assessment and heat transport. This position requires hands‑on work in the ATS laboratory, including setup of test apparatus and instrumentation, and participation in laboratory and field ignition testing activities.

 

This role may also support miscellaneous engineering and testing projects to ensure ATS continues to deliver high‑value, innovative, and cost‑effective solutions to PG&E business units.

 

Travel Requirement: Approximately 5%

 

 

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. 

 

The hourly rate for this position ranges from $24.52 to $35.37  

 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Apply engineering principles and scientific theory to perform testing, calculations, and analysis under the direction of senior engineers or supervisors.
  • Support inspection, failure analysis, and reporting activities related to fire hazards, ignition, and thermal damage.
  • Assist with laboratory and field testing, including setup and operation of test apparatus and instrumentation.
  • Operate laboratory equipment such as scanning electron microscopes (SEM), light microscopes, and micro‑hardness testers under supervision.
  • Compile, analyze, and document technical data to support engineering investigations and reports.
  • Partner with senior engineers to develop technical proficiency across multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Prepare periodic progress and productivity reports, including turnaround time and key business metrics for assigned work.

 

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Qualified candidates are pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering in a discipline related to the assignment Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Fire Engineering.
  • Students must be continuing their education towards their degree during and/or after the internship 

Desired Qualifications

  • Coursework or foundational knowledge in thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and fire science.
  • Familiarity with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools such as ANSYS FLUENT.
  • Basic knowledge of engineering research and testing concepts, theories, and methods.
  • Basic investigative and analytical skills.
  • Experience working in a laboratory or technical environment.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
