Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital is accepting applications for our 2026 Student Healthcare Internship Program (S.H.I.P) for Registered Nursing Students! This paid internship is located in Charlottesville, VA.

The S.H.I.P 9-week program gives students within their last 2 semesters of a Registered Nurse program the opportunity to shadow and learn valuable skills in a real hospital setting.

S.H.I.P. provides aspiring nurses unique opportunities to earn premium pay while working in an acute care setting at this nationally recognized, four-time Magnet-designated community hospital, located in Charlottesville Va.

All applicants who are selected to enroll in this internship will be expected to complete the summer schedule. Students who successfully complete the S.H.I.P. schedule will be provided with preferential job placement.

Important Dates:

  • Application Deadline is 3/2/2026

  • Start of program: 6/1/2026

  • Graduation 8/1/2026

  • Interviews begin week of 2/16/2026

  • Selected candidates notified by 3/13/2026

Education

  • Student of a Registered Nursing Program within 2 semesters of graduation required

  • High school Graduate or Equivalent required

Certification/Licensure

  • BLS required within 90 days of hire

Experience/ Availability

  • Availability for 1 shift per week on home unit (12 hour) and a half day shadow and lunch per week.

  • Availability for first week orientation within home unit. (3 Twelve-hour shifts)

  • Available for Day, Evening, or Night shift highly preferred.

RN Nursing Students are unlicensed staff members who are within two semesters of graduation from an accredited RN program They are accountable to, and work under the direct supervision of a professional nurse to implement delegated aspects of nursing care. Provide patient care, support the admissions and discharge process, and comply with patient safety practices under the direction of the professional nurse. Observe patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions and report any change to the nursing or medical staff.

Current student enrolled in clinical RN program must be within 2 semesters from graduation from accredited RN program. BLS certification within 90 days of hire.
