Salary Range: $20/hourly

is an non-exempt (hourly) position. Pay rates are based on education, skill,
experience level and internal equity. Internal equity considerations include an

The position is temporary (32 weeks) and part-time (19 hours/week). Hours are flexible based upon class/school schedule.
Who will I be Working With?
The Water Quality
Program is a group of approximately 30 staff who are passionate about protecting our streams and lakes in Mecklenburg County.We have backgrounds in various scientific fields
such as Environmental Science, Engineering, Biology, and Natural Resources
Management. We conduct monitoring and inspections, enforce environmental
regulations, and provide education. There are five sections within Water
Quality Pollution Prevention, Pollution Control, Compliance, Streams and Lakes
& Biologicals.
More About the Role:
This position will be in the Pollution Prevention Section. This team provides education to residents,
businesses, municipal employees, and students. They also promote and manage
water quality-related volunteer programs which typically involve over 5,000
residents per year.
What Will I Be Doing?
This position will
support volunteer programs, by assisting volunteers, and managing supplies and
equipment. The position will assist
with public education presentations regarding water quality at schools,
businesses, and special events. The position will also get a chance to pick
their own project with one of the other sections within the Water Quality
Program.
Position Summary
Perform work related to college studies and career goals; complete assigned duties under the direction of
a County professional staff member to gain career oriented knowledge and experience.
Essential Functions
Essential functions include assisting with community volunteer programs such as Adopt-A-Stream, Volunteer Monitoring, Storm Drain Marking, and monthly volunteer events. This will sometimes include work after normal business hours and weekends.
Works on separate projects and tasks such as developing and maintaining spreadsheets, performing fieldwork, evaluating information and results, and collaborating across departments.
Assists staff in the assigned departments with on-going research projects.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience:
No experience is required.
Education:
Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program at an accredited university or technical school in
a field of study directly related to the area of assignment.
Combination of relevant education and relevant experience accepted?: No
Computer Skills: Proficient in basic software applications such as Microsoft Office Suite.
Licenses and Certifications:
North Carolina or South Carolina Driver’s License. Must be able to obtain and maintain a County Operator’s Permit.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal candidate will have an energetic passion for the environment, community service, and volunteer programs.
Prior experience leading groups and working with volunteers is preferred.
Experience with public presentations is helpful in this position.
