About the Role
This is a full time, remote Summer Internship that can be based anywhere in the United States or Canada.

Calix is looking for a Summer intern to join our Legal team. In this role, you will be part of a unique and award-winning internship program within the company. The program provides the opportunity to learn new skills through training and on the job learning. The expected duration of the program is 90 days.

We're seeking a motivated student to work in the Intellectual Property/Products legal department for the Summer, which encompasses intellectual property, litigation, products, and artificial intelligence. The Intern will assist in supporting various aspects of the IP/Products function, such as patents, trademarks, open source, artificial intelligence, and contract negotiations.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Responsibilities may include assistance with and participation in any or all of the following:

  • Creating or updating policies for the patent program.
  • Assisting with identification of and/or review of patentable inventions.
  • Performing patent analysis.
  • Creating or updating policies for the trademark program.
  • Supporting review of artificial intelligence functionality.
  • Assisting in contract negotiations, particularly where IP or AI issues arise.
  • Supporting litigation and/or indemnification matters.
  • Assisting with ad-hoc projects by researching legal issues and regulatory developments and preparing summaries of research.
  • Collaborating with Calix’s team of in-house attorneys, outside counsel, business and engineering groups.

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Interested in pursuing a career in intellectual property. 
  • Some courses in intellectual property.
  • Excellent written and oral communication. 
  • Attention to detail. 
  • Strong Analytic skills. 
  • Experience in computer science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, or related field. An undergraduate or graduate degree in a technical or scientific field is a plus. Experience with AI is a plus.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Able to work for the complete summer break (May - August or June - September).

The base pay range for this position varies based on the geographic location. More information about the pay range specific to candidate location and other factors will be shared during the recruitment process. Individual pay is determined based on location of residence and multiple factors, including job-related knowledge, skills and experience.

San Francisco Bay Area:

29.90 - 36.80 USD Hourly

Select US Metros and States:

26.00 - 32.00 USD Hourly

Other US Locations:

23.40 - 28.80 USD Hourly
