Our directorates related to Mission Support & Operations include Office of General Counsel, Business Services, Communications and External Engagement, Operational Systems, Communications and Information Technology, and Performance Management.
The Business Services Directorate (BSD) provides crucial financial, procurement and sales, and project management services to PNNL, as required under our management and operations contract for operating the Lab on behalf of the Department of Energy. Responsibilities
PNNL is looking for motivated individuals interested in supporting the implementation of project controls solutions tailored to a diverse set of projects. The staff member primarily supports project teams and project managers in maintaining project controls systems (e.g., planning, scheduling, control, reporting, and performance measurement requirements) through performing the following activities:
• Develop detailed project controls plans, statements of work, and other project planning documents.
• Construct time-phased budgets, work schedules, work breakdown structures, and control account plans.
• Create project workflows (e.g., Gantt charts, PERT, and CPM network diagrams).
• Familiarize, learn, and apply knowledge of applicable PNNL policies, procedures, and customer expectations.
• Work simultaneously on different projects or with multiple sponsors.
The interns in this position will receive guidance, direction, assigned work and mentoring from more senior staff. They will develop and learn to apply knowledge of project controls and associated tools and techniques. The interns will learn to use effective communication, problem-solving, negotiating, and teamwork skills to identify high-risk issues that could impact a project's success; bring them to management’s attention. They will learn how to interact with internal and external sponsors to translate their needs into value-added project controls solutions, products and services.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Candidates must have a high school diploma /GED or higher
- Candidates must be degree-seeking undergraduate students enrolled at an accredited college or university
- Candidates must be taking at least 6 credit hours and have an overall cumulative GPA of 2.50
Preferred Qualifications:
- Preferred Degree Programs: Management Information Systems (MIS), Operations Management, Project Management, Finance, Construction Management, Engineering Management, Accounting.
- Coursework in management information systems and databases (e.g. SQL, Access, and Visual Basic).
- Some familiarity of project management concepts, terminology, and methodologies; knowledge of general business administration.
- Demonstrated organizational, problem-solving, interpersonal, verbal, and written communications skills.
- Exposure to project controls applications and tools including Primavera P6 and/or Microsoft Project.
- Experience with Microsoft Office software products such as Excel, Access, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Experience with data management and analysis.

This position involves access to sensitive systems and information. U.S. Citizenship is required. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is subject to the Department of Energy Unclassified Foreign Visits & Assignments Program site, information, technologies, and equipment access requirements.

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements
As a national laboratory, PNNL is responsible for adhering to the Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which require new employees to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identify Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete the applicable tier of federal background investigation post hire and receive a favorable federal adjudication. The tier of federal background investigation will be determined by job duties and national security or public trust responsibilities associated with the job. All tiers of investigation include a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last 1 to 7 years (depending on the applicable tier of investigation). Illegal drug activities include marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
For foreign national candidates:
If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) Federal risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement thereafter, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment. The tier of federal background investigation required to obtain the PIV credential will be determined by job duties at the time you become eligible for the PIV credential.

Please be aware that the Department of Energy (DOE) prohibits DOE employees and contractors from having any affiliation with the foreign government of a country DOE has identified as a “country of risk” without explicit approval by DOE and Battelle. Starting pay is calculated from the minimum of the pay range and actual placement in the range is determined based on an individual’s relevant job-related skills, qualifications, and experience. This approach is applicable to all positions, with the exception of positions governed by collective bargaining agreements and certain limited-term positions which have specific pay rules.

Instead, our compensation offers are determined by the specific requirements of the position, prevailing market trends, applicable collective bargaining agreements, pay equity for the position type, and individual qualifications and skills relevant to the performance of the position.
