About the Role
Who We Are
Sauron protects your family and home, bringing the innovations of autonomous robots and self-driving cars to residential security. Our team is led by veteran operators and engineers, alumni of Sonos, Paypal, Tesla, Apple, and Google. Sauron has raised an $27M seed round led by A* and Atomic with participation from other leading venture capital firms.
Role Summary
As a 3D Visualization Intern, you will work at the intersection of web technology and machine perception. You will help build the tools that engineers use to "see" what a system perceives in real-time. You will contribute to a high-performance 3D rendering engine (based on Three.js and Foxglove Studio) to help visualize complex sensor data, including LiDAR point clouds and camera feeds. This role is ideal for a student passionate about computer graphics, performance optimization, and the future of perception systems.
Our internships are approximately twelve (12) weeks long (we are flexible on start and end dates depending on your availability, with the possibility of extension or converting to fulltime).
Responsibilities
- 3D Feature Development: Assist in developing new features for a web-based 3D visualization platform using Three.js and WebGL.
- Simulation & Environment Modeling: Help build and configure virtual test environments to simulate various sensor outputs (LiDAR, Camera) and dynamic weather conditions (rain, fog, lighting changes).
- Performance Optimization: Work with mentors to identify bottlenecks in the rendering loop, helping to ensure smooth 60 FPS performance when rendering large-scale datasets.
- Data Pipelines: Help implement efficient data-handling logic using WebWorkers and WebAssembly to process streaming perception data without blocking the browser's main thread.
- Shader Exploration: Support the development of custom GLSL shaders to enhance how we visualize semantic scene understanding and environmental data.
- Collaboration: Partner with UI/UX designers and perception engineers to create intuitive tools that make complex robotic data easy to interpret.
Requirements
- Education: Final-year Bachelor’s, Master's in computer science or a related field.
- Graphics Programming: Proficiency in TypeScript and React, with an understanding of 3D mathematics (linear algebra, matrices).
- Web Performance: Understanding of how to optimize web applications for high-throughput data.
Nice to Haves
- WebAssembly (WASM): Exposure to compiling C++ or Rust for the web to accelerate compute-heavy tasks.
- Game Engine Experience: Proficiency with Unity or Unreal Engine, particularly regarding real-time rendering, physics, or simulation.
- 3D Asset Creation: Experience using Blender for 3D modeling, UV mapping, or creating assets for real-time applications.
- Simulation Frameworks: Experience with or a strong academic understanding of NVIDIA Isaac Sim or NVIDIA Omniverse.
We Value
1. The Power of "We": “Align, then Accelerate”
- We celebrate as a team and troubleshoot as a team.
- The goal is the mission, not the credit.
2. High Challenge, Low Ego: "Respect the person, debate the idea."
- Be ruthless with problems, but kind to people.
- Raise the bar, lower the shield
3. Speak up: "Silence is a setback."
- Your perspective is a requirement, not a suggestion.
- Speak the hard truths early so we can fix them fast.
4. Integrity in Motion: "Own the outcome, not just the task."
- Do what you say you’ll do.
- If it breaks, fix it. If it works, make it better.
5. Humanity at the Core: "Relationships over transactions."
- Earn trust through empathy and consistency.
- Anticipate needs before they become requests.
