Project Title: Technical Investigation of 3D‑NAND Physical Failure Analysis Workflows for Cycle Time Optimization
Project Description: Physical Failure Analysis (PFA) is an essential engineering discipline used to understand failure mechanisms in advanced semiconductor devices. For three‑dimensional NAND (3D‑NAND) flash memory, PFA workflows are inherently complex due to vertically stacked structures and advanced device architectures. As a result, PFA analysis methods involve multiple technical steps and learning considerations.
This internship project is structured as a learning‑focused technical study of PFA methodologies used in 3D‑NAND technologies. The student will review and study historical, de‑identified PFA case studies and analysis workflows to understand how different technical factors influence analysis complexity and cycle time variability.
Under close supervision, the intern will learn how PFA workflows are structured, how analytical steps are sequenced, and how engineers evaluate analysis efficiency from a technical perspective.

Scope:
  • Study documented Physical Failure Analysis workflows using historical and training reference materials
  • Review previously generated microscopy images, reports, and analysis summaries for learning purposes
  • Learn the theoretical operating principles of commonly used PFA tools through guided instruction and observation
  • Analyze workflow sequences to identify general factors that influence analysis duration and complexity
  • Develop conceptual frameworks to describe opportunities for workflow learning and methodological improvement

Deliverable: Analyze and resolve representative 3D‑NAND PFA cases to build technical depth in failure mechanisms and analysis flow. Based on hands‑on experience, identify cycle‑time bottlenecks, propose improvement concepts, and design controlled experiments to validate their effectiveness, with the goal of enabling measurable PFA cycle‑time reduction.
Skillset Require
  • Strong interest in learning about semiconductor devices and failure analysis concepts
  • Analytical mindset with ability to review and interpret technical documentation
  • Willingness to learn through observation, discussion, and guided study
  • Basic exposure to semiconductor or materials science concepts is beneficial but not required
Course of interests:
Students pursuing Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or Chemistry are encouraged to apply. Prior coursework related to semiconductors or microelectronics is advantageous but not mandatory.
