About the Role
Overview

The Pathology Lab Intern will assist the Pathology Lab team with a wide range of tasks and projects as related to fulfilling curriculum requirements, receiving specimens, preparing slide trays, sorting pathology requisitions, filing blocks and slides, scanning pathology logs and shipping labels, and assisting with all aspects of lab organization and maintenance.


Responsibilities

 

Essential Functions

  • Complete curriculum requirements.
  • Receive specimens into the lab following protocol.
  • Release orders in the laboratory information system.
  • Prepare specimens and blocks for grossing.
  • Prepare blocks for techs after embedding, including but not limited to cleaning and organizing blocks prior to tech microtome cutting.
  • Assist with H&E slide preparation, including loading and unloading of slides into/ from auto-stainer, and operating cover slipper.
  • Prepare slide trays and requisitions prior to delivery to pathologists.
  • Perform am and pm opening and closing duties as assigned.
  • Daily, weekly, and periodic cleaning of lab equipment and tools per schedule.
  • File each slides, blocks and requisitions per procedure.
  • Organize and scan pathology logs and shipping labels.
  • Complete and adhere to compliance and safety training.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education

  • High school student or graduate with an interest in and aptitude to work in Laboratory Science.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must be flexible with hours to meet workflow demands
  • Must possess attention to detail, good organizational skills and computer skills.
  • Must possess excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize appropriately, and work well both individually and as part of a team.
  • Ability to use time productively and contribute to company operational efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to communicate in an active multi-office environment.
  • Ability to efficiently operate all job-related office equipment (telephone, computer, calculator, fax, copier).
  • Ability to communicate via telephone.
  • Ability to sit for large portions of a workday.
