About the Role

As an Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) intern, you will work alongside engineers and scientists on hardware development, payload integration & operations, laboratory & test operations, modeling & simulation, space environments, scientific research and propulsion systems for programs like Human Landing Systems, Space Launch Systems and the International Space Station!

On the Engineering and Science Services and Capabilities Augmentation (ESSCA) contract, ASED provides engineering, scientific, and technical support to NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, AL. Our Structural Dynamics & Integration team is a high performing group executing challenging tasks for dynamic analysis of the Space Launch System (SLS), Human Lander System (HLS) and including the Systems Engineering and Integration (SE&I) functions.  This exciting work will serve as a critical step in sending humans to the Moon, Mars and beyond!

Responsibilities:


We are searching for undergraduate or graduate student summer intern to provide Structural Dynamics support for the SLS vehicle development and a various other projects. Working independently and in an integrated, collaborative team, your responsibilities would be to:

  • Performing structural dynamic analyses for spacecraft flight hardware.

  • Producing and maintaining models generated from both in-house and commercially available software codes, that simulate mechanical loading conditions, dynamic environments (shock and vibration), and mechanism motions.

  • Performing loads development (primary structure and component level), shock and vibration environments determination and component and system level testing and data evaluation.

  • Preparing test plans/requirements for: static, separation dynamics, vibration, modal and shock tests. Analyze and document the results in post-test reports.

  • Generating detailed analysis reports and presenting/communicating those results with the customer

  • Perform safety and certification training to support ESSCA and customer requirements.

Expectations included in the ASED Internship:

  • You are expected to have a valid driver's license, have access to an automobile, and be able to drive yourself to work locations. In addition, as of May 7, 2025, a Star ID  drivers license is required for access on base.

  • You will be expected to attend MSFC facility scheduled tours, Technical Fellow talks, luncheons, and training sessions in addition to your work.

  • We highly encourage you to participate in activities outside of work with your fellow interns. These activities will be scheduled, with your input, by your social coordinators and will be beneficial in forming a cohesive group and lasting friendships.

Qualifications:

Current enrollment in a BS degree program for Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or related degree program is required. Degree program at an ABET accredited institution preferred. Candidate must have completed the 2nd year of a college program (Sophomore year) or equivalent.

Must be able to provide own transportation.

The ideal candidate will have a strong sampling of the following skills and a desire to learn.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Basic knowledge of PATRAN or FEMAP, NASTRAN, and/or MATLAB.

  • Interest in dynamics of structural systems using classical analysis and finite element based methods.

  • Familiarity with NASA and/or commercial spaceflight programs.

  • Experience with Matlab, Python or other programming language to support creation of in-house tools and scripts

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. Must be able to effectively communicate technical information via written reports and PowerPoint presentations.

  • A proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite competence (Word, Office, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook) is required.

  • Have completed sophomore year of university studies and be in good academic standing.

  • Maintain an overall average of 3.0

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%).

Physical Requirements

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance 

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.

Service Contract Act (SCA) Compensation & Benefits:

This is an hourly, overtime-eligible position that falls under the Service Contract Act (SCA). In accordance with the Health and Welfare provisions of the SCA, and in addition to your base hourly rate, you may be eligible to receive an additional health and welfare payment for each hour you work to ensure compliance with the minimums set forth by the act. The amount you are entitled to receive will vary depending upon the fringe benefits you select now and in the future.
