About The Company
As one of Europe's leading game development studios, Guerrilla has continually pushed the boundaries of technical and artistic excellence since its inception in 2003. Today, the studio employs 400 professionals from 25 different nationalities. Guerrilla’s state-of-the-art offices are located in the cultural and historical heart of Amsterdam, The Netherlands — a great place to work and play. Guerrilla was founded as the result of a merger between three smaller Dutch studios: Lost Boys Games, Orange Games and Digital Infinity. In 2005, it was acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment after the release of Killzone on PlayStation 2. In the decade that followed, Guerrilla expanded Killzone into a successful franchise with a handheld spin-off and three sequels. Guerrilla's next title, released for PlayStation 4 in 2017 and for PC in 2020, is the critically and popularly acclaimed open world action-RPG Horizon Zero Dawn. The studio released its sequel Horizon Forbidden West in February 2022, with the Burning Shores expansion in 2023. This year, Guerrilla also released the PSVR2 title, Horizon Call of the Mountain.

INTERNSHIPS AT GUERRILLA

At Guerrilla we're a passionate team of creators, storytellers, and innovators who thrive on breaking boundaries and creating adventures that captivate players. As an intern at Guerrilla, you will immerse yourself in the world of game development. From collaborating with industry leaders to working on cutting-edge projects, you'll gain hands-on experience in various aspects of game creation.

Our UI/UX Team

We are right at the heart of Guerrilla’s game development. We work closely with game designers and other disciplines to make sure the quality of our player experience is as good as possible. From brainstorming with audio designers on a HUD element to collaborating with artists on the best interactable object, we're always adding our expertise. Of course we also leverage that UX expertise by providing optimal flows and interactions using well-designed wireframes and prototypes. All this plus adding a beautiful visual layer of UI design that appeals to our players (and ourselves!) by using strong layouts, colors, fonts, shapes and motion design!

In sum, we’re a team that never gets bored, is always looking for a challenge and excels by working together to create the best experiences for our players.

WHO YOU ARE

In order to qualify for an internship at Guerrilla, you must be:

  • Currently enrolled in a Dutch school within a relevant field of study
  • Able to work on-site in our Amsterdam studio
  • Able to live and work in the Netherlands
  • Available for an Internship starting September 2026

Additionally, we'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • Experience with UI Design and/or UX Design
  • Affinity with Graphic Design, Interaction Design or Motion Design
  • A love for layouts, shape language and player psychology
  • An itch for interface interactions that just feel right
  • Wanting to learn about developing UI/UX for AAA Games
  • A passion for games no matter which platform

WHAT YOU WILL DO

An internship as UIX Designer is exciting as you will be at the heart of game development. UX reaches so many different aspects of our players journey, and our UI designs ensure that this journey will be an extension of the world they are exploring. By growing both your design- and soft skills, you will grow your toolset and start your journey in the game industry!

During the internship you will learn about:

  • User Experience Design in all its facets. At Guerrilla we apply a Player Centered design approach, so understanding the different types of players and their behaviors is key. To balance your design between their feedback, Game Direction goals and your own vision is how the UX comes to live. From doing focused research into a specific menu pattern or player problem to creating wireframes to build your solution.
  • User Interface Design and what makes a button. After setting up the foundations of the UX design, the next step is to ensure that experience feels cohesive, is readable and fits within the world the player is exploring in the game. This is the realm of UI, where you will learn about graphic design principles, colors, fonts and digital painting.
  • Collaboration across disciplines. Not only will you work together closely with your fellow UIX Designers, on a weekly if not daily basis you will collaborate with the other disciplines that join forces to create a game. Learning how to process complex systems from Game Design or how to work together with Audio designers to give your UIX that extra layer of depth are all part of the experience.
  • Decima, our game engine. We work closely with our UI Code team, the engineers who use their skills and magic to get our designs into the game via our game engine Decima. And there is an opportunity for you to learn about this process. How to export your design assets, how to write proper documentation and collaborate with the engineers to ensure the implementation matches the experience we envision. Depending on the phase of the project, you might get the opportunity to build the interface yourself in the UI Editor.
  • UI Animation to bring it all together. Now that you have a solid UX foundation that looks amazing with the UI layer into the game, there’s an additional layer we can explore; Motion Design. By using animations you can highlight certain aspects of the UI and add a satisfying layer of expression and emotion to the player's journey.

Summary:

  • UX Design (user research, wireframes, player journeys, mockups)
  • UI Design (font, colors, visual style learnings, icons)
  • UI implementation (in Decima applying new textures, setting up simple prefabs)
  • UI Animation (in decima, animations, flipbooks, after effects)
  • Collaborating with other UIX designers, other design teams, attending meetings, learning to scope their work, honing their communication and soft skills.
