About the Role

Description

About Ethos Laboratories

Ethos Laboratories is a specialty clinical laboratory focused on supporting providers who manage complex patients, including those in addiction recovery, chronic pain, and behavioral health. Our core strength is delivering clinically actionable insights through advanced toxicology, biochemical testing, and pharmacogenomics.

We partner directly with providers to improve adherence monitoring, clinical decision-making, and patient outcomes, supported by fast turnaround times, high-complexity testing, and robust reporting and analytics. With a strong foundation in innovation and a mission to help more people, Ethos is advancing how diagnostic data is used to inform care in real-world clinical settings.

Position Overview

Ethos Laboratories is seeking a highly motivated Clinical Informatics & UX Design Intern to support the design and optimization of user experiences within our laboratory information system.

This role sits at the intersection of healthcare, informatics, and user experience design, focusing on translating complex clinical laboratory workflows into intuitive, visual, and user-centered system designs.

The intern will work closely with clinical, operational, and technical teams to understand real-world lab processes, map user journeys across the LIS, and develop storyboards and UX/UI concepts that improve usability, efficiency, and accuracy.

This is a hands-on, high-impact opportunity to contribute to real healthcare systems used daily by clinicians and laboratory professionals.

Why This Role Stands Out

This internship is designed for students who want more than a typical UX role. You will work on real clinical systems used in high-volume healthcare environments, tackle complex workflows where design directly impacts patient care, and gain exposure to informatics, diagnostics, and operational systems at scale.

You will present your work directly to executive leadership and build a portfolio with real-world, production-relevant use cases. Top candidates will be those who are intellectually curious, systems-oriented, and excited to solve complex problems at the intersection of healthcare and technology.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

Workflow Storyboarding and Process Mapping

Observe and document end-to-end laboratory workflows including accessioning, processing, testing, and reporting

Translate workflows into visual storyboards and user journey maps

Identify key user interactions, decision points, and areas of friction

UX/UI Design

Design intuitive interfaces and workflows using tools such as Figma

Create wireframes, mockups, and interactive prototypes aligned to LIS functionality

Ensure designs support clinical accuracy, efficiency, and ease of use

User Research and Testing

Conduct user interviews with lab staff and stakeholders

Gather feedback on current system usability

Support usability testing of proposed designs and iterate based on findings

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Work with laboratory operations, IT, and leadership teams to align designs with real-world needs

Translate clinical requirements into user-centered design solutions

Optional (Based on Skillset)

Assist in light front-end prototyping using HTML and CSS

Support design-to-development handoff processes

What You Will Work On

Mapping the sample lifecycle from collection to result reporting

Designing improved workflows for lab technicians within the LIS

Creating user flows for multi-step clinical processes

Identifying and reducing friction in high-volume lab operations

Qualifications

Required

Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Informatics, Human-Computer Interaction, Biomedical Informatics, UX/UI Design, or a related field

Experience with Figma or similar design tools

Basic understanding of user research methods

Strong visual communication and problem-solving skills

Interest in healthcare, clinical systems, or digital health

Preferred

Experience with HTML and CSS

Prior UX/UI project work or portfolio

Exposure to workflow mapping or process design

Interest in clinical environments or healthcare operations

Application Requirement

Applicants must submit a portfolio demonstrating UX/UI design work. This should include examples of wireframes, prototypes, or interactive designs, as well as user research or usability testing projects. Experience with process mapping, journey mapping, or systems thinking is strongly preferred.

What You Will Gain

Real-world experience working inside a high-complexity clinical laboratory

Exposure to healthcare systems, informatics, and diagnostics

Opportunity to build a portfolio of meaningful, real-world UX work

Direct collaboration with leadership and cross-functional teams

Insight into how design impacts patient care, clinical accuracy, and operational efficiency
