About the Role

At Roche you can show up as yourself, embraced for the unique qualities you bring. Our culture encourages personal expression, open dialogue, and genuine connections,  where you are valued, accepted and respected for who you are, allowing you to thrive both personally and professionally. This is how we aim to prevent, stop and cure diseases and ensure everyone has access to healthcare today and for generations to come. Join Roche, where every voice matters.

The Position

Our Global Internship Programme in Innovation & Sustainability (#IP2TIS) offers a unique opportunity for passionate individuals to gain hands-on experience in the pharmaceutical industry while making a positive impact on the world.

Are you ready to join a global network spanning 20+ countries, where bright minds collaborate to tackle real-world challenges in Innovation & Sustainability? Do you want to work on impactful projects, shape the future, and drive change from within?

In this internship, you will support the project “From Paper to Power: AI-Driven Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Robotic Process Automation (RPA) for Executed Batch Records (EBRs) in Pharma Technical Operations” and help explore how digital technologies can transform manual, paper-based processes into scalable data workflows. You will analyze the current way EBRs are processed, identify pain points, and help assess the best technical approach available within Roche. Together with the team, you will design and test a prototype workflow that uses AI, OCR, and automation to extract data from EBRs and convert it into a structured digital format. After 3 months, you are expected to contribute to a proof of concept, evaluation results, and practical recommendations for a scaled pilot. Your work can help reduce repetitive manual transcription, improve data quality, and enable faster process insights that support reliable medicine supply. This internship is particularly exciting because you will work on a tangible end-to-end prototype with real business relevance and potential to scale across products and sites.

The Opportunity

  • Analyze the current EBR processing workflow and compare the as-is process with future automation possibilities

  • Identify key challenges related to document size, layout variability, handwritten entries, and multilingual content

  • Explore and assess AI, OCR, RPA, and related digital tools for extracting data from EBRs

  • Help design, build, or refine a prototype workflow for automated data extraction and basic validation

  • Support prompt design and tuning for AI models used in data extraction and transformation

  • Compare automated extraction results with manual transcription and document accuracy, efficiency, and stability

  • Prepare structured outputs such as Excel or Google Sheet datasets and perform basic quality checks

  • Contribute to recommendations and a roadmap for scaling the solution to further use cases and products

Who You Are

You are enrolled or have completed your Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD studies at a university, preferably in the field of Computer Science / Data Science, Pharmaceutical Sciences / Pharmacy, Chemical Engineering / Bioprocess Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, (Bio)Chemistry, Industrial Engineering / Process Engineering within the last 12 months and are interested in applying your knowledge in a modern working environment as part of an internship of at least 3 months.

Furthermore you are

  • You have basic programming skills, preferably in Python, and ideally first experience with APIs, OCR, document processing, or data extraction

  • You are comfortable working with structured data such as Excel, CSV files, or databases, and have an interest in AI or machine learning tools, including prompt design for data workflows

  • You bring structured and analytical thinking, attention to detail, and a reliable way of working, especially when handling GxP-relevant data

  • You communicate clearly and collaborate well with scientists, engineers, and IT colleagues while showing curiosity and a hands-on problem-solving mindset

  • You are proactive and independent, open to feedback, and fluent in English; German is a plus

If you meet most but not all qualifications, we still encourage you to apply.

Additional information

The internship is expected to start between 1 and 16 July 2026 and will last at least 3 months.
