At the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI, we combine the expertise of our employees to drive medical progress. Our focus includes cell and gene therapy, therapeutics and vaccines, molecular and immune diagnostics, as well as other innovative fields. We are the professional home of scientists, engineers, laboratory technicians, and administrative staff who are all dedicated to improving human health. Are you eager to put your theoretical knowledge into practice and gain exciting insights into interdisciplinary cutting-edge research? Then you’ve come to the right place! Fraunhofer IZI operates a branch in Rostock. There, we are currently seeking a Master’s student to complete a thesis project. The work will be carried out in cooperation with the Institute for Biomedical Engineering (IBMT) at the University of Rostock in Warnemünde; part of the experimental work will be conducted there. Thesis topic: Plasma- and biomaterial-based surface modification of membranes for the cultivation of phagocytic cells as a therapeutic approach for Alzheimer’s disease
Be part of change
This Master’s thesis addresses the question of how phagocytic cells (e.g., microglia) can be utilized for innovative therapeutic approaches to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Microglia possess highly developed defense and clearance mechanisms, enabling them to identify and remove damaged structures, degradation products, and other unwanted particles. They play a key role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease. The aim is to culture these “cleansing” cells on specialized membranes in order to improve extracorporeal blood purification processes in the future. For this purpose, polymer membranes (e.g., polysulfone and cellulose) will be specifically surface-modified using plasma technology and biomaterial-based coatings. The modified surfaces are intended to optimize cell adhesion and function, creating ideal conditions for the cultivation of microglial cells. In this way, the project contributes to the development of cell-based therapeutic strategies for neurodegenerative diseases. Within the scope of the thesis project, the following steps are planned:
