Are you seeking hands-on engineering experience within the aerospace and defense industry?

At RTX, we recognize the technical foundation, discipline, and leadership that midshipmen bring to the workforce. This internship provides a structured learning experience designed to develop technical, analytical, and research-based skills in a real-world engineering environment.

This opportunity is hosted within Pratt & Whitney’s coatings and materials engineering team. Interns will gain exposure to engineering practices supporting gas turbine engine systems through guided research, observation, and hands-on learning activities.

About the Internship

This internship is designed as a learning-focused research experience aligned to US Naval Academy program requirements.

Interns will:

  • Work alongside engineers and lab technicians in a supervised environment
  • Gain exposure to coatings development, testing, and analysis
  • Participate in structured research and data analysis activities
  • Develop technical documentation and presentation skills

All work is structured for learning, observation, and academic development.

What You Will Do

  • Participate in a structured research project related to coatings, materials, or testing processes
  • Observe and support laboratory activities, including sample preparation and experimental setups
  • Assist in data collection, organization, and basic analysis under supervision
  • Learn and apply engineering principles related to materials and coatings systems
  • Document observations, research findings, and technical insights
  • Collaborate with engineering mentors through regular check-ins and guidance sessions
  • Attend team meetings and technical discussions to gain exposure to engineering workflows
  • Complete a final written report summarizing project scope, methodology, and outcomes
  • Present findings to the engineering team at the conclusion of the internship

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Must be accepted into the US Naval Academy Midshipman Research Internship Program
  • Must meet all USNA internship participation requirements
  • Currently pursuing a degree in engineering, materials science, or a related technical field
  • Strong academic standing
  • Basic understanding of engineering fundamentals
  • Ability to follow safety protocols and laboratory procedures
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Interest in materials, coatings, or aerospace systems
  • Exposure to laboratory or research environments
  • Experience with data analysis or technical reporting
  • Ability to work in a team-based, structured learning environment
