About The Company
Fraunhofer IGD is the international leading institute for applied research in visual computing. Visual computing is image- and model-based information technology and includes computer graphics and computer vision, as well as virtual and augmented reality. In simple terms, the Fraunhofer researchers in Darmstadt, Rostock, and Kiel are turning information into images and extracting information from images. In cooperation with its partners, technical solutions and market-relevant products are created. Prototypes and integrated solutions are developed in accordance with customized requirements. In doing so, Fraunhofer IGD places users at the forefront, providing them with technical solutions to facilitate computer work and make it more efficient. Owing to its numerous innovations, Fraunhofer IGD raises man-machine interaction to a new level. Man is able to work in a more result-oriented and effective way by means of the computer and visual computing developments.
About the Role

Advertisement for the field of study such as: Automation technology, electrical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, software design or comparable.

The Intelligent Mobile Manipulation research group of Fraunhofer IPA at IPAI Spaces in Heilbronn develops AI-enabled mobile manipulation systems that combine robot learning, motion planning, and whole-body control. To validate the industrial application possibilities using intelligent mobile manipulator, we are currently looking for committed interns or student assistants (m/f/d) who would like to take the opportunity to gain practical experience with our different mobile manipulator platforms to support our team. You will work in a group with other students supervised by researchers and take on specific tasks. The aim is to analyze the robot's capabilities and to implement algorithms that enable the robot to be used sensibly in industrial applications.

Hier sorgen Sie für Veränderung

During your internship/work as an student assistant, you will be able to take on tasks from the following areas:

  • Adaptive Motion Planning: Implement and validate algorithms that combine machine learning policies with classical motion planning to enable dynamic, reactive motion with formal safety or feasibility guarantees
  • Data Driven Intelligence: Assist in data collection and refinement of imitation learning pipelines to improve the reliability of policy-based motion planning
  • Whole Body Control: Explore and customize different IK solvers and custom controllers to enable coordination between mobile base and arm
  • Hardware Integration: Help design and build custom camera setups, sensor mounts, and demo environments
  • Supporting the research group in day-to-day research

Hiermit bringen Sie sich ein

  • Valid enrollment at a German university or Hochschule
  • Robotics Fundamentals: a solid grasp of ROS 2, ROS2 Control, 3D transformations, inverse kinematics (IK) and motion planning
  • Programming experience in Python (pytorch, Jax) and working knowledge of C++
  • Familiarity with learning-based robotics concepts, like vision-language-action models, foundation models, imitation learning, or reinforcement learning
  • You can handle hardware responsibly
  • You are open and curious about other specialist areas and willing to familiarize yourself independently with new topics
  • Good Command of English and/or German
  • Optional: Experience with physics simulators like Mujoco or Isaac Sim
  • Optional: Experience with CAD software like Solidworks and 3D printing for quick prototyping

Was wir für Sie bereithalten

  • Hands-on work on mobile manipulator: You may validate your results on our robots in the lab, like an industrial dual arm mobile manipulator, a Semi-Humanoid, and a Hello Stretch 3
  • An open and self-determined working environment: You will have the opportunity to develop your own solutions for a wide range of challenges
  • Theory-practice transfer: We offer you ideal conditions to apply your knowledge in practice alongside your studies
  • Attractive framework conditions: Flexible working hours to optimize the compatibility of study and practice
  • Option to pursue a thesis (bachelor/master) after the internship

If you are interested in putting your skills to the test and one of the areas of responsibility described above might suit you, please get in touch with us.

Note: Please apply with the following documents: cover letter, resume, a certificate of enrollment and/or mandatory internship letter.
