What is it that we do at Colonial Pipeline Company?

Colonial Pipeline is the largest refined products pipeline in the United States, transporting more than 100 million gallons or 2.5 million barrels per day. Colonial transports various grades of gasoline, diesel fuel, home heating oil, jet fuel, and fuels for the U.S. military through a pipeline system. Colonial transports approximately 45 percent of all fuel consumed on the East Coast, providing refined products to more than 50 million Americans.

What is a Controls Engineer? 

Controls Engineers design, test, implement, and troubleshoot control systems including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), and low-voltage electrical circuits. These systems monitor inputs like pressure, temperature, flow rates, and equipment status, enabling automated responses or alerts to ensure safe and efficient pipeline operations. 

Controls Engineers collaborate across departments—Operations, Engineering, Safety, Compliance, Cybersecurity, and more—to improve system reliability, safety, and performance. They also document projects using standardized templates and conduct thorough testing to mitigate operational risks in our 24/7/365 environment. Apply today and be part of something impactful! 

What a Controls Engineering Co-Op might learn and do: 

  • Understand pipeline systems, layout, and operations. 

  • Use industry-standard software tools for control system development. 

  • Shadow experienced engineers and participated in real-world problem-solving. 

  • Interpret electrical schematics, loop drawings, and P&IDs. 

  • Conduct site walkdowns to gather project data. 

  • Troubleshoot simulated control system scenarios. 

  • Assist with small-scale control system enhancements under the guidance of a mentor.    

  • Gain hands-on experience with PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) programming and HMI (Human Machine Interface) design. 

  • Build and test control system replicas in a lab setting to test changes by simulating real-world operations.   

  • Collaborate on system analysis and reliability testing. 

  • Learn documentation practices for control system design and implementation. 

  • Participate in commissioning projects at pipeline facilities. 

  • Present a summary of your experience to supervisors and stakeholders. 

  • Receive and provide feedback to enhance your professional growth. 

What You Bring to the Table: 

  • Pursuing a degree in Electrical, Controls, Computer, Mechanical, Chemical, or related Engineering discipline. 

  • Coursework or project experience in programming, automation, or robotics. 

  • Interest in Industrial Automation and control systems. 

  • Strong technical aptitude and hands-on mindset. 

  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage workload effectively. 

  • Attention to detail and excellent communication skills. 

  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. 

  • Willingness to travel occasionally. 

  • Positive attitude and ability to thrive in a diverse, team-oriented environment.
