The Food Bank CENC is a sponsor of the USDA Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), which provides free meals to children during the summer months. Meals are distributed at community-based sites such as parks, schools, playgrounds, housing communities, day camps, churches, and community centers from June through August. The program is often paired with educational and recreational activities to support children’s overall well-being. The SFSP Summer Intern supports the Food Bank’s administration of the SFSP from May - August.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Provide operational and administrative support to program sites.
- Support and implement organizational and site-level outreach efforts to help achieve target participation at each sponsored site.
- Conduct the required sponsor-monitoring visits in Wake County, including initial and four-week visits.
- Ensure site compliance with recordkeeping requirements, including daily and weekly meal count records and required program documentation.
- Support the overall management of the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), including assisting with the recruitment of additional sites.
- Assist with operations at non-congregate meal distribution sites.
- Review and support reconciliation of delivery receipts from congregate food vendors.

Minimum Requirements
Education:
- Current undergraduate student pursuing a bachelor’s degree, preferably in Public Health, Social Work, Nutrition, Human Services, Nonprofit Management, or a related field.
- Rising sophomore, junior, or senior in good academic standing.
Experience:
- Demonstrated experience in customer service, community engagement, or administrative support, gained through work, internships, volunteer roles, or campus involvement.
Skills and Competencies:
- Technical Proficiency – Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and comfortable learning new technology platforms (e.g., CRM, data reporting tools, inventory systems).
- Exceptional Communication Skills – Strong written, verbal, and presentation abilities; able to translate complex ideas into clear, compelling messages for diverse audiences.
- Community Engagement Skills – Skilled at fostering trust, facilitating dialogue, and engaging diverse community members in program delivery.
- Analytical Thinking & Attention to Detail – Adept at gathering, interpreting, and applying data to improve programs and inform decision-making.
- Sound Judgment & Integrity – Demonstrates ethical decision-making, discretion, and professionalism in all interactions.
- Adaptability & Resilience – Thrives in dynamic environments, responds effectively to shifting priorities, and leads others through change.
- Planning & Organization – Able to set priorities, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines without sacrificing quality.
- Commitment & Dedication – Must believe in the mission of the organization and prove dedication for mission-driven work.
- Bilingual Skills – Ability to speak and write in Spanish highly preferred.

- Driving Requirements – Valid North Carolina driver’s license and excellent driving record; ability to travel extensively throughout the Food Bank’s 34-county service area.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to communicate clearly, hear, and interact effectively with others without deliberate impediment (e.g., wearing or listening to headphones). The employee frequently sits and uses hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects and equipment. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb, balance, stoop, crouch, crawl, and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision.

Work Environment
While performing the responsibilities of this position, the employee will work in a variety of settings, including an office environment, warehouse, and off-site partner or community locations. This requires frequent travel by automobile, transit van, or large truck within the Food Bank’s 34-county service area.
In warehouse and kitchen environments, the employee may occasionally be exposed to moving mechanical parts, vehicles, temperature fluctuations, and moderate noise levels.
